This and That:

Oregon State Assessment: Grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the Oregon State Assessment starting Tuesday, April 19, and through the month of May. A Wing and B Wing are testing locations. Testing times will vary throughout the day by grade level. Classroom
specific testing times are listed below so activities and wing use can be coordinated to help provide a quiet testing environment:

  • 5th Grade: April 19-May27 Daily 9:00-10:00
  • 4th Grade: May 2nd-May27 Time TBD
  • 3rd May 2nd-May27 Time TBD

You can help promote a good testing environment by reviewing and enforcing hallway and restroom rules and ensuring that we don’t have unmonitored activity in the wings during testing windows.

SIW Agenda: SIW this week is “Teacher Prep.” The “optional K-1 Foundational Skills training” that was scheduled for 4/20 from 1:30-3:00 has been canceled.

Staff Meeting Agenda: Student placement timeline, Staffing, Art in the Meadow,

Focus on Excellence and Equity:

TLC Update: No new update last week.

Foundational Skills Adoption Update: The foundational skills adoption is to the point in the process that the team is looking for feedback from our staff that will be using the program. Remember, this is a K-5 adoption and will not be optional (ALL classes will be using it starting at the very beginning of the school year), and now is your time to give input. On Saturday 4/16,, Anna Schmitt sent an email with details about how you can preview the programs. Also, Shannon and Olivia will be hosting an optional drop-by in the library this Wednesday from 12:30-1:00 to give you a look at some lessons and answer questions.

YouthTruth Data 2022:

Below are the percent positive responses for two themes (culture and communication & feedback) and some representative comments from families for these two themes.

81% of families surveyed at Elk Meadow Elementary School responded positively to the following:

Representative Comment(s) about Culture:

  • This is likely being that I am engaged, and not nearly as much I would like to be during covid. But as I highlighted, I believe/ feel that the teachers and administrators do truly care about their students and take pride in what they do. I have never felt awkward in asking questions and am always respected. I also love the values and character traits this school promotes and embraces as well as the power of growth mindsets. The Art emphasis was a big draw for our family, although our current teacher doesn’t seem to embrace the arts as much as in past years. I also really do appreciate the sense of community that is promoted at EMES and for the most part what I deduce from my interactions with other families!
  • The friendly teachers and staff create a welcoming and positive atmosphere for my child, they seem to do this very well.
  • Our child’s teacher has been exceptionally helpful, thoughtful, professional, informative, and kind. She knows our child and her abilities and supports our child’s learning.
  • The Staff as well as my child’s teacher treat my child with respect and kindness every day. Ensuring his comfortability in the school to aid in his learning
  • I love Elk Meadow because of the big hearts and realistic expectations and concerns of the staff I Feel like family the staff have gone above and beyond and help me through my son’s behaviors learning challenges and I am forever grateful for the staff at elk meadow I sincerely and whole heatedly believe they are heaven sent and by fare are the best school my kids have attended here in Bend Oregon. Thank you thank you to Elk Meadow staff. 😁

Communication and Feedback:

73% of families surveyed at Elk Meadow Elementary School responded positively to the following:

Representative comment(s) about communication and feedback:

•Our child’s teacher communicates with us regularly about what is happening in the classroom and what they are working on and learning. The teacher regularly engages the parents in the education of the child and what is happening. She also has events for the kids to help them celebrate and she seeks input from the parents

•I don’t really know what’s going on at school other than what I see in random emails

•I like that it is close to our home and the kids can walk. For the X grade class, I feel, as a parent, that there is zero communication regarding classwork, expectations, progress….no homework, my child has never brought anything home showing completed work. I have nothing to go off of, except for report cards. We didn’t even get a progress report when my Z grader did.
For the Z grade, I’m very happy, so this survey mainly covers my concerns with the X grade class. My Z grader has weekly homework, book reports, and emails with lists stating “what to ask your child about class this week”. I LOVE this. The best method for keeping track of what your kid is remembering and accomplishing at school every day. I’m very happy with Z grade this year. Not sure what’s going on in X grade.

•I like elks meadows school. My teacher always emails me to keep everything informed about school every week or so.

•There is a lack of communication from the teachers.

To Do:

Summer School: We will need to have the first round of summer school invites completed by the end of this week. I would like to meet with each team or a representative or two from each team this week to talk through the decision-making. I shouldn’t need more than 10-15 minutes with you. Please let me know what works for your team ASAP.

Art in the Meadow: Please start sharing about Art in the Meadow with your families. Here is a flyer you can share.

Parent Volunteers: Before a volunteer can begin, you will need to get official confirmation from Cindy or Chris that the parent has passed the background check. Once they say yes, you will need to add them to this weekly google document letting us know who to expect each day.
