March 29, 2021

Hi everyone!

I hope you were all able to spend some time relaxing and rejuvenating during this break. I spent time in the sun and snow and even got engaged:) It was pretty great! I can’t believe we only have 14 weeks left in the year!

On March 25th and 26th, the district released a tentative plan for All-in instruction. If you missed it, you can find it here: https://www.bend.k12.or.us/district/news-events/news/2021/03/tentative-all-plan.

This means that several things are changing for us during these next couple of weeks.

  • This week and next week we will not have classes on Wednesday via webex and teachers can use this time to plan for all-in instruction as well as work on reconfiguration. This needs to be at school as far as I know now.
  • Conferences will change to be 4 hours on the evenings of the 21st and 22nd.

We don’t yet know a couple of things but I will share it with you at a staff meeting at 9:00 on Wednesday morning in my webex room. These include,

  • Our rotation schedule. It will be either Monday/Thursday 0-3 and Tues/Fri 4-7 with Wednesday either 0-7 short or 0-3 one week and then 4-7 the other week.
  • Our bell schedule. The first class for students will begin at 10:25 and the last class will end at 4:38. Our contract time will likely be 8:45-4:45.
  • Our lunch schedule. There are a few more guidelines within the RSSL guidance that continue to make lunch time challenging. This time may include a longer lunch period, and may also include increased supervision by staff on a rotational basis.

As I said, I will know more about all of the questions that you may have by Wednesday morning. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to shoot them my way and Ryan and I will work on getting answers.

I feel lucky to do this work with all of you. We’ve got this! Happy Monday. -L

March 12, 2021

Good morning everyone!

As you may have heard, there will be an update to our Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance sometime this week. We DO NOT know what this guidance will give us; however, if the distance guidelines move from 6′ to 3 ‘ AND the square footage changes from 35 ft2 to 17 ft2 AND the cohort size increases from 100 to 200 THEN BLP will be bringing students back into the buildings very soon. The timeline for this would be very near conferences although this has not been determined. I will keep you up-to-date as I learn more.

We will be having our 8th grade fire drills this week as well as our Stand-Up Meeting on Wednesday from 9:30-9:40 in my room. Please remember to give reminders constantly to students regarding distancing, hand-washing, and wearing masks. They continue to do a great job in classrooms but once leaving, it becomes more difficult. Finally, it is our first track meet this week so please cheer on our Eagles!

ACTION | Canvas Modules & Assignments Update: Upon our return from spring break, ALL PCMS teachers will employ a “Weekly Guide” format for Canvas in order to better support our families and provide consistency between all of our courses. If you want some help knowing how to embed docs, google slides, or interactives directly into assignments, pages, announcements or anything, please send Amanda Redmond an email. She would love to set up a Webex if needed! Refer to these resources:

  1. Go to Canvas commons and import the “PCMS hyperlink weekly guide- template” into your courses.
  2. In each box link the assignments, pages, or external tools students will need that day by clicking 1. Insert-> 2. Link -> 3. Course Link
  3. Add your office hours into the appropriate boxes with links to your Webex room.
  4. Make sure that your assignments/pages are published! Also put the instructions to the assignment into the assignment itself so that it’s a one stop shop!
  5. Bonus: title your assignments/pages with the following emojis. Ex: 🏡📝Density Homework
    • Assignment done at school: 🎓📝
    • Assignment done at home: 🏡📝
    • Wednesday assignment: 👨‍💻📝
    • Page used at school: 🎓📘
    • Page used at home: 🏡📘
    • Wednesday page: 👨‍💻📝
    • Extension work: 🚀

ACTION | Conference Information: On Thursday and Friday of this week, students will begin to complete their April Take Home conference slides for their classes in Periods 1-3.

  • Students will upload the Take Home Conference PDF to Notability during Advisory. Mandy is sharing this with all Advisory teachers but if you need it, HERE it is.
  • During the day, students will complete the corresponding page for periods 1-3, including Artifact upload and reflection. This should be reflective and quality work as it will demonstrate the learning that has occurred and will continue to develop during the year in this course.
  • Invite Only Conferences will happen from 5-7 on Wednesday, April 14th. If you have a student who you want to make sure you have a scheduled conference with, please add their first and last name to THIS LIST along with your own name. Please include any students from Eagle Weeks who fit the bill as well. We will organize these names and get ready to communicate to families for the following week. Please have names uploaded by Friday, 3/19.
  • There is a video that you will show to students during Advisory about the process. Ryan is working on this now and will share it with you prior to Advisory on Thursday.
  • Teacher/Classroom Video: Detailed instructions and requirements for these videos can be found HERE. Please add your video to the folder HERE. If you want to do a Loom recording for your video, Jane Ward made a slideshow to accompany her video that serves as a nice and easy-to-replicate model.
  • Additionally, there are TWO quick questions for you to answer on this Google Form that will be part of what we share with families around conferences. If you need help filming, would like to borrow a microphone, or have any other questions, see Ryan.

ACTION | Team & Teacher Budget Spending & Forecasting: Refer to Deb’s email sent 3/12 for more details. Teachers and teams, please complete the PD | Add’l $150 | Wishlist | Curriculum workbook. New deadline to spend and forecast is Friday, 4/2.

Let the Golden Weeks begin again!

During the next four weeks or so, we will have several timely tasks, alterations, and learning opportunities that will help to set the stage for the rest of our year together with students and families. They will also set us up for the future as we begin to plan for school year 2021-2022. Please let me know if you have questions along the way and pay careful attention to due dates that arise this time of year.

Rushed Stand-Up Meetings: Our stand up meetings (10 minutes) are currently scheduled for 9:35-9:45 because teacher prep-time is designated from 8:30-9:35 and admin is not supposed to dip into this time. Teachers reported feeling that the 9:45 end with a 9:45 start is a bit hectic. Please let me know your preference in changing this time slightly using THIS SURVEY.

Student Sports Participation SurveyAdvisory Classes: Our Athletics department is trying to get an idea of how many students plan to participate in football and cross country next season. Please take a minute in your Tuesday and Thursday Advisory classes this week and have students complete this Google Form. Thank you!

Track & Field Staff Volunteers Needed: Due to COVID restrictions on parent volunteers, our Head Coach is asking for some help. A stipend is available…amount unknown at this time, but Brooke is looking into it. For more information and the meet schedule, refer to Jane Ward’s March 5 email and/or contact her directly. Go Golden Eagles!

Conference Preparation:

  • Teacher/Classroom Video: In order to attempt to provide a more-typical experience for our families during conferences, all middle schools will host videos of staff introducing themselves and discussing the particulars of their courses. The hope is that this creates an increased connection in a time where connection with families can be difficult. I know many of you are providing much of this same information via email and other ways, so please know that this is not coming from a deficit-based lens or that I think our current practices are lacking in anyway. As a district, the decision was made to try this out and I thank you in advance for taking the time to provide this meaningful information in a fun and engaging way.

The detailed instructions and requirements for these videos can be found HERE. Please add your video to the folder HERE. If you want to do a Loom recording for your video, Jane Ward made a slideshow to accompany her video that serves as a nice and easy-to-replicate model.

Additionally, there are TWO quick questions for you to answer on this Google Form that will be part of what we share with families around conferences. If you need help filming, would like to borrow a microphone, or have any other questions, see Ryan.

  • Artifact: On March 18th and 19th, students will add their Artifact for conferences related to their Golden Week classes. We will share the template with you in next week’s Update.
  • Invite Only Conferences: Please keep in mind students who you may want to conference with in an invite-only session. We will add these to a spreadsheet to set up times prior to having all-school sign-ups beginning.

School-wide Alignment in Canvas: On Wednesday, our ICCL team will be sharing a number of updates. One of these is to bring us all in closer alignment, minimize confusion, and increase family/student usability with Canvas. Although by this point all teachers have a system that is working for them; however, our families are experiencing a system that is quite different class to class. A new system, even with slight differences, multiplied by seven classes can be a way to ensure that disengaged students don’t persevere and families who would otherwise like to support become frustrated and don’t even try. Upon returning from Spring Break (if not before), all classes will begin using a “Weekly Guide” that parents and students can find in the Module section (most of you already use a form of a Weekly Plan). The guide will have all assignments/tasks/tools liked to it rather than having families need to click through many pages and additional areas to find assignments. The guide will also clearly outline work as either HOME or SCHOOL. The good news is that for most of you, this will only require you to rename and begin linking assignments/tasks/tools to the weekly plan you already have.

2020/21 Budget Update: Within the next several of days each department/team will receive their YTD discretionary budget balance and YTD expense details. The balance must be spent by 4/30.

Professional Development, Wishlists, Curriculum & Teacher $150: In an effort to plan for the balance of this year and for 2021/22, we are asking our teaching staff and teams to take time to complete this PD | Wishlists | Curriculum Planning worksheet by Friday, March 19. There are four tabs for each budget allocation. Please note, if there is professional development that you wish to attend before June 30, 2021, list that as well. Contact me if you have any questions.

Summer Teacher Opportunity: Bend-La Pine Schools will be offering a summer learning program for district students.  This program is in the planning stages right now so details are far from being decided. Refer to Jim Boen’s March 5 email for more information and survey which will close March 29.

Doug Reeves PD Opportunity: As the district made temporary changes to our policies on grading practices, we committed to ongoing discussion of equitable grading. To ground this work in research and best practices, we are engaging in a partnership with Dr. Reeves, an internationally respected educational leader. Dr. Reeves and his team will provide professional learning opportunities for all certified staff and engage in deeper action research with interested staff. To kick off this work, on Wednesday, March 10th, from 2:30-4:00, you are invited to join a WebEx with Dr. Doug Reeves to learn more about a new district study on equitable grading practices, beginning with an overview of some of the latest research on equity in schools. Although this research is grounded in students who experience poverty, it highlights excellent practices which are good for all students, regardless of background. I encourage you to join if you are interested. More information below:

Equity and Excellence Right Now: The 90 90 90 Solution

In this session based on his latest book (Solution Tree, 2020), Dr. Douglas Reeves will share the latest research on equity. Since the original publication of the 90 90 90 studies, we have learned a great deal about school improvement in high-poverty schools. This session will include compelling new evidence on how schools make a profound difference in the lives of students in poverty. Some of the evidence challenges conventional beliefs about dealing with students in poverty. The emerging research and science on this subject will help teachers, leaders, and policy makers allocate resources and time wisely to help students in poverty achieve their potential.

This week we look forward to sending many kuddos to our Classified Staff at PCMS. You are all teachers, coaches, nurturers, learners, and great models for our young people. You also often are the unsung heroes of what is able to get done each day in a school. You make us work, you make us better, and you make this place truly special. Thank you now and always to our fantastic Classified Staff. Our school is so lucky to have such amazing super heroes working with our future leaders. Thank you!!!

New Golden Eagles: We are really excited to welcome Ron Lund as our new 7th grade football coach and Troy O Bryan as our new Assistant football coach! We also still are looking for a new Volleyball coach as well as an assistant Cross Country coach. If you or someone you know might be interested, please encourage them to APPLY HERE.

COVID Reminders: Thank you all for making our transition so smooth. Please remember to be the constant source of reminders for students when walking in the halls, sanitizing hands frequently, and staying 6 ft apart. Our students are doing a great job but will continue to need support as the honeymoon period wears off.

Upcoming Conferences: Middle School conferences are currently scheduled for April 14-16. In the past we have voted to consolidate the times for conferences to two days (April 14 and 15 from 8-8) in order to have Friday completely off. We need to vote to make this happen if people are interested. Please VOTE HERE for your preference.

Conferences will likely be virtual. In order to make this the most efficient and effective experience, students will do a Take Home conference prior to the sing-up opening. This means that you should work with your teams to determine what would be a good artifact for students to use in their take home conference related to your course. Because we are in a 2-week cycle of classes, Golden Week classes will need to have students complete their Take Home Conference slide for these classes on March 18th and 19th. Eagle Week courses on April 5th and 6th. Students will complete the Take Home conference between April 5th and 7th.

Conference sign ups will open on April 7th for families. That said, we will meet the week before to determine which students and families will need Invite Only conferences. Start to think about who your students are that will need to be part of an Invite Only conference. We will share more information related to conferences in upcoming updates including the documents that we will use. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Race, Equity, History, and Raising Great Humans: A Group for Learning– This group comes together every other week to discuss a variety of topics related to the issues above. It was created to learn together using a variety of media including podcasts, videos, books, and essays. During the next two-month session (March and April), we will focus on information related to Oregon’s history. As we launch this new session, we want to invite anyone to participate in some or all of the sessions. Any and all are welcome. We will share the content for each upcoming session using this list serve periodically. Please SIGN UP HERE if you are interested.

Dates: Every other Thursday (3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15, 4,29)
Times: 6-7pm
Location: webex: https://bls.webex.com/meet/lisa.birk

State Testing: The federal “Education Department said Monday that it will not allow states to forgo federally required standardized testing in schools this year but will give them flexibility to delay testing or hold it online during the pandemic.” Read more in this AP article. We do not know – yet – what this means for Oregon (who had previously communicated that we would be pausing on state assessments this year), but we are sure to hear more about this as things begin to become unraveled.

SLGGs: In our stand up meeting this week, we will walk everyone through the school-wide SLGGs we will have this year. You are welcome to make your own but if you’d prefer to use school-wide info, we will share this this week. Please fire up your Talent Ed to be ready to enter information.

Attendance Information: Please remember to take attendance for students who are will you in class each day as well as your Wednesday attendance. Our kids are doing a great job! Currently, we have 97% of our students attending in person and 94% attendance during Wednesday classes.

Mid Year check-in: In our last blog I gave you three main questions to consider for our check-ins during this mid-year time. Please use THIS LINK to sign up for a time when you and I can meet to discuss these questions and start to plan for the future. The last question regarding assessment and grading is something to begin thinking about as our district begins to work intently on this topic for the next two years in secondary. Below are the questions.

  • In your opinion, how are things going at PCMS (beyond COVID)? What practices do you believe we should consider Adopting, Adapting, or Abandoning during the next couple of years?
  • Where do you see yourself in the next three years? What is your perfect assignment/role? What would you be willing to teach if it wasn’t your current role?
  • Over the next year, we will be digging into our grading practices to make moves to support equitable access and outcomes. What do you believe is good about your current grading practices? Where would you like to learn more? How can a student/family understand or recognize growth in your class related to course content? Related to 5Cs?

Lunch Information: Please remind students to order lunch only if they are going to take it. Lately there have been many lunches made and left on the racks that ultimately get thrown away which impacts both our waste and our plastic use.

Advisory Contacts: Although this is not an Advisory week, now would be a good time to call to connect with any family on the Advisory list that may be demonstrating some signs of struggle during the first three weeks. Although e-mails are efficient, it is likely that for those who need the most support, a call would be more impactful and create a longer-lasting and meaningful connection for both families and students. It is also a great opportunity to celebrate those who are doing a great job in this new model.

As Mandy shared previously, in Advisory coming up we will be diving into College and Career discussions. During this mini unit we will be showcasing some videos from our staff about their college experiences! If you would like to talk about your associates, bachelors, masters, or doctorate please open this slideshow and use the speaker notes on slide 1 as instructions.

February 22, 2021

Happy Monday everyone!

New Rotations: This week we are beginning a brand new rotation of classes! Because this was not part of our first practice during Orientation, you may find that there are many uneasy students wondering where their next class will be. Any time that you can find to help support students in the hallway this week will go a long way for them. I know that with cleaning, this is tricky so it may be helpful to have a bit of a conversation about this near the end of class with everyone.

COVID Symptoms: It is certainly possible that during the next few months, you may encounter a student who is demonstrating symptoms that are in line with COVID. The plan remains to either call 7804 and give information to Deb or Christina and they will send someone your way. If you cannot ensure auditory privacy, please send an e-mail to Deb or Christina with the information and they can contact us. Although this can feel uneasy, we have made plans for this. You’ve got this!

EBISS & Synching: This week we will begin EBISS. In order to have current information from which we can make decisions, ALL STAFF should be synching multiple times each week. This allows families to have consistent information, and will support our time together on Wednesday as we make next steps determinations for our students. I will begin to put EBISS data together tomorrow afternoon so please synch prior to then if you aren’t in the habit already.

Future Planning: If you can believe it, now is the time that we are already starting to plan for the future. In the next couple of weeks, Ryan and I will be meeting with each of you to get feedback on several questions. Please begin to think about these:

Student/Staff Photo Days: Thursday, 2/25 and Friday, 2/26 are creeping up fast! Following Covid-19 safety protocols, 7th and 8th Graders will be called alphabetically in groups of 20-25 between 11:00-12:00 and 1:55-4:10. 6th Graders will remain in cohorts and called between 12:05-1:50 by class. Due to an “abnormal” year, we will be using the loud speaker throughout the day to call students. Our apologies. If you have any questions, contact Deb or Ryan. If there are any changes to the following schedule, we will let you know.

Staff: If you would like to do a fun or silly photo, please snap this on a phone or camera along with your department and send them on to Amy Kissel. The individual photos done by Dorian should remain professional as the district may use them for a variety of purposes each year.

TimeThursday, Feb. 25 & Friday, Feb. 26
7:00-9:00Dorian Photographer arrives/sets up (Gym or ESS Room)
9:30-10:00Remote Learners (CDL/BLPO) Drive-thru (per sign up)

February 15, 2021

Week One has come and gone! Thank you all so much for getting us to this point. We continue to need to practice and model our protocols but in terms of a day-to-day flow, it feels great to have our Golden Eagles with us again! You are all doing a wonderful job and I hope you have received several kuddos from families and students along the way.

As we move into the next few weeks together, continue to give reminders, be consistent, and model what it means to be COVID safe at school. This is now also a great time to communicate with families about what they can expect in terms of at home work, time frames, content being taught, and best ways to contact you. There is no such thing as too much positive and clear communication. Thank you for sharing this with me when it goes out to families.

New Staff: We are pleased to welcome some new staff members to the team during the next couple of weeks!

  • Renee McCoy is joining the staff from Bend Tech Academy as our new Registrar! Her first day will be on March 1st. Renee has been in this role at BTA as well as a local business owner and formerly the librarian at High Lakes
  • Sarah Compton is joining our team from most recently the Tutoring Club! Sarah has some connections with our students already and is excited to support classrooms and students as our new Educational Assistant beginning on Wednesday. Sarah has also formerly supported students in Home Tutoring within the district.
  • Jake Miles is coming most recently from Sisters Middle School where he has been teaching middle school math and during the fall, he taught at High Desert MS. He will be taking on Cindy’s 8th grade classes as soon as mid-week next week!

Still Looking: We continue to search for a new French teacher for Period 4. Anyone? Anyone? 🙂

Inclement Weather and Moving in and out of Hybrid Instruction: This document outlines the expectations of students and staff in District CDLCDL related to quarantine, Hybrid, and All In models.  It is also important to remember that schools might be in one or more model(s) at a time or they may move in and out of a model. For example, most of a school could be in Hybrid but one class could be participating in CDL because of quarantine. Weather Expectations. I will get clarification regarding what type of schedule will be used during CDL days. I know that Friday of last week felt quite short and at the high schools, CDL is following a typical schedule. It is likely that we will do this too and I will have more information later this week regarding this decision.

C-19 Code: You will begin seeing a C19 code for attendance.  This is an umbrella absence code that we are using for our COVID-19 exposures, cases and students following our COVID guidelines for any illness symptoms. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Anita. As a reminder, confidentiality is critical. You do not need to investigate as that is the role of our health officials. Our officials supporting these decisions will also not allow a student back into the building until it is deemed a safe entry.

No SIW this Wednesday: We will have a quick 10 minute meeting in my webex room on Wednesday morning from 9:35-9:45. I will share our future weekly schedules and SLGG info with everyone this week as well.

Attendance: Please make sure to take attendance for students in class on in-person days as well as during Wednesday webex meetings. In the event that we have a day like today, only those that were required to be in the meeting (L-Z) would need to have attendance taken.

Safety Concern Anonymous Tips: Please remember to use this document if you’d like to share a concern with the safety team. As a reminder, if students express a safety concern to you, please let them know that you will share it with the safety team if you are unable to solve it easily. ANONYMOUS SAFETY SHARE

Safety Reminders: Please continue to remind your students to dress warm as they will be outside for a portion of their day during the lunch hour. They also are needing consistent reminders regarding social distancing in the hallways, before and after school, and when waiting for a class to open. Keep giving gentle corrections and praising when you see things going really well. Students are working hard and so are you. Thank you for helping us maintain our protocols!

ACR Deadlines: These are quickly approaching and there is now an electronic form that parents can use for ACRs. Families (and you if you have a student on an ACR) can find this information HERE. This year all families will need to complete a new form as boundaries for the new HS will be in effect.

Lunch Time Specifics: HERE are the lunch time breakdowns that we shared on Wednesday.

OBOB: The Middle School Schoolers will be battling student teams on Wednesday, February 17th beginning at 1 pm, every 45 minutes. Battles will occur in Marni’s room if you’d like to support students in reading excellence!

Assembly Reminder: During Advisory on Wednesday, we will have a school-wide assembly that will be hosted in Liza’s room. Please remind your students to meet you there at 9:45.

5th Grade Virtual Informational Night: Tuesday, 2/23 at 5:30 PM. A invitation with slideshow link will be sent to 5th grade families for review and they can meeting in my Webex room for a Q&A session at 5:30 PM. Any teacher who can join is welcome and will be introduced.

PCMS Spirit Fridays & Online Swag Store is Open! Every Friday is spirit day so wear gold, black, silver and white or any of the many PCMS apparel on sale online NOW and until Friday, 3/5

Student & Staff Photo Days: Just a reminder that Thr. 2/25 and Fri. 2/26 are school photos days. We will be utilizing the Gym or the ESS room to create a Covid safe flow. We will be sending out a firm schedule and further instructions to staff regarding how we will proceed on both photo days including staff photo times. These days will have several interruptions as we call students down.

What a great beginning! Thank you all for making our students feel connected, safe, calm, and cared for as we transition into our new schedule together.

This Week:

  • We will have a staff meeting on Wednesday (2/10) at 2 pm in my webex. Please bring with you any questions or celebrations that you see during our first full two days together.
  • Please record any students who do not come on Monday or Tuesday to your classes on THIS SHEET. We will use this to identify students who are missing and Advisory teachers will reach out to a smaller list after Tami does some cross-checking.
  • Please remember to send an e-mail to Christina and Deb if you need anything in the classroom. You can also call 7804.
  • Per Lora’s e-mail, students with last names L-Z whom you would have taught in person on Friday will now attend your Webex on Friday instead. Please use the Wednesday schedule for your classes and remind your students about this along the way.
  • At the end of the day, please empty your trash into the larger trash bins in the hallway. Feel free to use the gloves that you got as part of your PPE to do this task. This helps our custodians tremendously. Thank you!
  • We had a virtual assembly scheduled for this Wednesday during Advisory. INSTEAD, the virtual assembly will be the following week on Wednesday (2/17).
  • Welcome, welcome, welcome to our fantastic new Golden Eagles Margaret Grubb and Anja Du Bois. We will also have a sib in Cindy D’s role. Please give them a hand as we get going next week.
  • Monday will be a great day of celebration and Deb could use some help if you can. In the morning if you are able, swing by the office and she can put you to work! Yard signs abound!
  • Please sport your Golden Eagle colors and remind students how you INSPIRE, LEARN, and CARE each day in your subject area. This pandemic has really shown us all that WE ARE THE BEST AT GETTING BETTER.
  • I love working with you ❤️ &✌️

Grades: Just a friendly reminder to please post your grades by end of day Friday, February 5th if you haven’t done so already. Don’t forget to check the Students Withdrawing Spreadsheet and follow the instructions send by Rachel Mavis to enter grades for these students. Let Christina know when you’ve finished.

Thanks for all of your great work to get ready for students on Monday. Please join me in my webex room for some quick updates at 9 am on Monday to make sure people have what they need and to hear from ICCL. Below is important information and the News from the Nest is full as well. Please read both if possible.

New Schedule: Wednesdays are added here now. We have other updates related to the MOU to share on Monday as well.

Orientation Tools: Use the attached link to find the slides and schedule for Orientation. Remember to show your PCMS pride all this week. Gold and Black is the name of the game!

First Semester Grading is Open in Synergy: Following is important information you’ll need to enter your grades for 1st semester.

  • ALL grades are due by Friday February 5th at 4:00pm. Please email me or stop by my office when you’ve posted your grades so I can let you know if any are missing. This is more important than other years due to the fact that any students switching between BLPO and CDL and Hybrid will no longer appear after Friday.
  • Although you are using Canvas grade books, you’ll still need to post grades in Synergy so I can run necessary reports and processes for student transcripts etc. Please remember to run the passback process from Canvas to push assignments and grades to Synergy. I’ve attached a few guides for you regarding grading in Synergy.
  • Advisory Teachers, please refer to page 3 of the “TVUE Secondary Report Card” document. This will explain how to enter Pass/No Pass grades for your Advisory class.
  • While this is not ideal… grade changes/corrections can be made by me after the grading window has closed. If you need to make a grade change/correction, please email me that request using this exact format: “Please change (student’s name) grade in (course title) from a (incorrect grade) to a (correct grade)“.
  • Here is a list of report card comments (English & Spanish) if you’d like to give more details regarding your students’ grades. Please be sure to use the Spanish option for your Spanish speaking families.
  • Gradebook sync for Sem. 3 and Quarter 3 will be run by IT on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd. This will create shells in Canvas for the upcoming semester 2 grading period and term.

KN95 Mask Distribution to Staff: Bend-La Pine has received a supply of KN95 masks that are available to issue to staff immediately. We will issue a total of five masks, one for each day of the week, to each staff member who requests one. Each mask can be used for up to five times as detailed in these guidelines. (also attached is the correct manner these masks should be donned and doffed). We do NOT have an unlimited supply of KN95 masks and do not know if or when we will be getting more. Therefore, issuing these masks for the remainder of the year is unknown at this time. If you wish to receive KN95 masks, please complete this Google Form and masks and paper bags for storage will be placed in your mailbox. KN95 masks may not be comfortable to wear for everyone. If for some reason, after a day or two, you realize the KN95 is not your preferred mask, please return unopened masks to Tami. Reminder, those who have not received a face shield but would like one can email Tami to arrange that.

Masking Update: We are no longer allowing gaiters, buffs and bandanas as substitutes for cloth/disposable masks that fit snugly around the mouth and nose. Buffs/gaiters placed OVER a mask that adheres to our requirements are permissible.  Masks with valves or otherwise vent air are never acceptable. I hope you are all looking forward to enjoying some time in the snow in Central Oregon! As we move into next week and the weeks to come, please let us know what you may need along the way. Here are a couple of items to peruse prior to our meeting.

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics: Deschutes County will have completed its first round of vaccine doses to those who are eligible as part of Oregon’s Phase 1a Vaccine Sequencing Plan by the weekend, allowing the County to move into Phase1b, which includes current K-12 school employees. Appointments will be available on the below dates. Current k-12 employees only are invited to sign up for an appointment here. Vaccine video.

  • The vaccine is available by appointment only. Bring your current staff ID to your appointment.
  • Look for your confirmation from St. Charles Health System/MyChart in your email after submission. Your appointment scheduling is complete once you have received this message.
  • There is no out of pocket cost for our staff to attend this clinic and the vaccine is optional for employees.
  • The vaccination process includes several steps and will take between 30 and 45 minutes to complete.
  • We ask that only those with vaccine appointments enter the vaccination facility, due to space and physical distancing requirements.
  • There continues to be a very limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in Oregon.
  • Do not share this email or the signup link with others; do not post to social media, forward the email or print and hand to your neighbor.
  • This opportunity has been created for our staff and we need to respect this; any person who shares this link with others outside of current school staff is potentially taking a vaccine away from an eligible educator.
  • Your friends and family members can fill out the vaccine interest form at vaccine.deschutes.org

Staff Welcome Back Coffee, Pastries and Lunch: Coffee, tea and pastry bar will be available starting at 8:00 on Monday. Also, leave your brown bags at home! Our wonderful PCCO is treating us to grab-n-go lunch on Monday. Covid-19 safety guidelines will be followed. Assorted individually wrapped items with GF and vegan options; beverages and desserts!

Virtual Assembly Prep: This Monday, office support staff will be snapping some photos of you with your most favorite, creative, and unique mask on. These photos will be used for our upcoming assembly on Wednesday, 2/10 at 9:00am. We shall we how many students can recognize you smiling eyes!

Welcome Back to School: We are requiring all families and staff review an informational video for all Bend-La Pine Schools about health and safety related procedures that will need to be followed when students return to in-person learning. Targeted toward middle school and high school students.

Classroom & Staff PPE Supplies: For starters, we have delivered to you classrooms: 1 box of facial tissue, 1 large bottle hand sanitizer, 1 box of disposal masks (for staff & students), 1 package of washable masks (for staff). Contact Tami if you need to replenish these items or if you have not picked up your face shield.

MAC Day: Our second MAC survey day of this school year will be next Tuesday, January 26th. Refer to Jenn Rueter’s mail dated January 19, 2021 for more information or contact her directly if you have any questions at [email protected].

Hybrid Substitute Out Reach: We have sent an email and survey to all subs (122) that have provided coverage at PCMS between September 1, 2018 – March 20, 2020. Feel free to reach out to your “favorite” subs and/or refer to the survey responses that will continue to update over the next several days. Also, if you wish to set up your “preferred sub” list in Aesops/Frontline, click here for instructions. IMPORTANT: Sub names and contact information is confidential to be used for PCMS purposes only. COVID-19 Vaccine for BLPS Staff: All education staff are expected to be eligible to take part in vaccine clinics as soon as the week of Jan. 25 and Feb. 1st depending on county access. According to Julianne, you can fill out the Deschutes County vaccine interest form at vaccine.deschutes.org if you’d like to get an e-mail when a vaccine is available. We will use the information you submit to notify you when you’re eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and will also send vaccine updates as they are available. For more information on vaccines in Deschutes County, please visit www.deschutes.org/covid19vaccine.

The decision to participate in a vaccination is personal and should not be discussed with others. Please do not ask others about their participation as the vaccinations become available.

Current Events Discussion this week (from Jim’s blog): I do not need to tell you that people in our community (staff in our school community as well as families in our broader community) are feeling maxed, anxious, and worn out. The events in DC may be a prelude to other unlawful and/or disruptive events that may occur in the coming days. The following information related to talking about controversial issues (specifically those connected with the current political climate – but any topic that may potentially be controversial) should be considered. First, talking about tough topics is absolutely something that must be a part of a student’s educational experience. These should not be avoided – if done right. Here is a very helpful checklist for a teacher to consider. (All steps are not required, but are rather meant to be a support when planning, conducting, and reflecting on teaching/dialogue related to equity and anti-racism.) To set the stage for controversial conversations to be productive and not reactionary or isolated, the classroom climate must be developed intentionally over time–our LEAD Cohort’s website has tools for steadily building a climate of equity dialogue. We also have district Administrative Regulation (GBG-AR) regarding Staff Participation in Political Activities. I’d like to highlight the third and fourth paragraphs. Additionally, this BLS Election Guidance was sent out earlier this fall. All of these documents should be seen as support for teachers in how to prepare for and facilitate difficult conversations within the classroom learning environment.

If you need support, please talk with Ryan or I.

Openings at PCMS!: Currently, we are hiring for two EA positions as well as two football coaches. Football is still not confirmed but we are hiring regardless for these positions as our past leaders have students who are now older and have moved on. If you know someone who may be great or who is interested, please encourage them to reach out to Ryan or I and apply online.

Protocols for Hybrid: In addition to the email that Paul Dean sent to all BLP staff outlining some of the district-wide safety and cleaning procedures, you can consult the Pacific Crest Covid-19 Safety Guidelines information page to get guidance on the measures we are taking in our building to mitigate risk and ensure safety. For additional information and/or clarification, contact Walt or Ryan.

Family & Friends Trivia Night – New Date!: Our Family Trivia Night has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 3rd from 6:00-7:30pm. Updated links are below.
