We welcomed more than 600 students through our doors this week to start our 2023-24 school year. Amazing! It’s such a great feeling to get this big, beautiful building full of student laughter again. And our hard-working teachers and staff have created a warm, welcoming, safe environment for high levels of learning.
In advisory this week we introduced new campus-wide expectations, reviewed our “Big 4” rules, and started to create classroom community. In each area of the school, we want students to know exactly what safe, respectful, and responsible looks like. Teachers are invited to create these same expectations for their classrooms. We want students to be a part of this!
Finally, to end the week, we played our first Friday walkout song and greeted the kids outside with popsicles. Thank you to our PCCO for helping with this!
Pay special attention to the message below from the district office. We have the most student cyclists of any other middle school in the district, so this message is especially important for our kids.
Enjoy your weekend, and see you Monday!

GET TO & FROM SCHOOL IN A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE MANNER
Safety is a primary concern this week as students return to school. That begins with all of us doing our part to make sure students have safe ways to travel to and from school, whether by bus or car, bike or scooter, or on foot.
Students and families may experience some congestion and confusion outside schools this week. It will get better! Here’s how DRIVERS can help:
Slow down and watch for students making their way to buses, walking or rolling to school, and crossing streets and parking areas.
If you are dropping off or picking up your student at school, please plan for some extra time and be patient with the line.
STUDENTS & FAMILIES, here’s what we’d like you to know about getting to school:
SAFE ROUTES: We have fun, safe and convenient walking/biking routes to many of our schools. See all 19 Safe Routes for Bend-La Pine Schools at commuteoptions.org/safe-routes-to-school
ABOUT E-BIKES:Students 16 and older legally may operate e-bikes in Oregon. Anyone under 16 may not, according to state law. Be aware of this and use e-bikes legally and responsibly.
ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET if using a bike, scooter, skateboard or other wheeled device.
WATCH YOUR SPEED! The start of school brings more traffic around our schools and along key routes. Please slow down in high-traffic areas and around pedestrians.
DISMOUNT AND WALKyour bike, scooter or skateboard when on school property. We ask that you not ride on school grounds, before or after school.

Volunteering at PCMS: Information & Process
We love volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering at PCMS and are not currently cleared to do so, please go to the BLS Volunteer webpage for all the information you need to become a volunteer. It takes 5-7 days to process background checks, so we encourage you to apply today!
Welcome to the last weekend of summer! We just finished an amazing launch week with our teachers and staff here at PCMS. To top it off, our 8th grade WEB leaders did their final training before welcoming our new 6th graders on Wednesday.
There is a lot of energy and anticipation for next week! We’re psyched! Please keep reading for important updates from our counselors regarding student schedules and a review of school rules from our assistant principal and dean of students.
See you soon!
Sean
Changes to Student Schedules
Our student services department is not taking schedule change requests unless there is an error with your child’s schedule. An error would look like accidentally having two identical classes, etc. Specifically, we do not change student schedules for friends or activities. Many of our students have extracurricular activities and we simply cannot accommodate changing schedules for this. Also, classes are still being balanced and all students should check their schedules on the first day of school. Thank you for your understanding.
First Day of School for our 6th Graders
We are very excited that your child will be attending Pacific Crest Middle School. We look forward to seeing them on Wednesday, September 6th, for their first day of school. Their day will start with an orientation led by our PCMS WEB Leaders to help your 6th grader get off to a great start! District bus transportation is available, and your student must be registered. Click here to find all information regarding bus transportation, bus registration and view pick-up/drop-off times and locations for your student.
Your student will arrive at school by 8:50 am
Students will be treated to a free school lunch on this day only.
After lunch, they will attend their classes for the remainder of the day.
The day will end at 3:45. Schedule of events for this day is available here.
Your student is advised not to bring backpacks, purses, or similar items, as the day will involve a lot of physical activity.
Because the day is active, please ensure that your student wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement.
REMINDER! New 7th and 8th Grade Student Orientation
We will be hosting a brief information session for 7th and 8th grade students that are new to Pacific Crest this school year. Join us on Wednesday, September 6th, from 1:00-2:00 pm. During this time, we will hand out schedules, test out lockers, tour the building, and get to meet some of the wonderful 8th grade WEB leaders. Families will need to provide transportation to and from Pacific Crest. If this is something that you would be interested in having your student join, please fill out this form so that we can have an accurate headcount of students. If you have any questions, contact our main office at (541)-355-7804.
Authorization for Medication Administration
Beginning Wednesday, September 6th parents, not students, can bring student medication to the school for us to administer during the school year. Each medication must have a completed Authorization for Medication form which can be downloaded and turned in with medication. All medication must be in the original labeled container. Prescription medication needs to have a legible pharmacy label. Drop off medication with Tami Nielsen in the Attendance Office. If you have questions, call Tami at (541) 355-7020. If your student has a health condition you would like to discuss with our school nurse, please reach out to Oliver Tatum at (541) 355-6922 or [email protected].
Student School Supplies
Pacific Crest Middle School will provide students with essential classroom materials. Students will receive supplies within the first several days of school. Additional supplies will be provided by their teachers as needed in the class. We will be working with students on how to care for their materials to make sure they last all year, please help reinforce this message at home.
Families are welcome to provide additional classroom supplies for their student, if desired and personal items such as backpacks, water bottles, headphones, lunch boxes, etc. If your family needs help securing a personal item, reach out to our FAN advocate, Donna Connet at (541) 355-5684 or [email protected] for support. For specific questions, reach out to Pacific Crest’s main office.
Student Pick-Up & Drop-Off
You may drop your student off as early as 8:35 AM. First period starts at 8:50 AM, but we’d like all students here no later than 8:45 AM. We want everyone to have time to go to their locker to drop off their backpack and get materials for class. Backpacks are not allowed in classrooms.
Tardy Policy
A tardy is when a student enters a classroom after the tardy bell (the bell that starts class). This year, we will also have a 1-minute-warning bell. Students will have plenty of time to get to any classroom on campus, even if they use the restroom and go to their locker. After three tardies, students will be assigned a lunch detention, and we will notify families. Students who continue to show up late will be referred to administration.
Electronic Device Policy
All electronic devices (cell phones, AirPods, gaming tablets, etc.) need to be SILENT AND AWAY ALL DAY. “Silent” means no buzzing, no ringing, no distraction whatsoever. “Away” means that it should not be seen; device needs to be stored in a pocket, locker, bag, etc.
Students may use their iPads during lunch, and they may use their iPad during class time, as long as they are following the teacher’s directions. For example, if, during an art project, the teacher says they may listen to music on the iPad, then the student may do so, but they must use headphones or earbuds.
If students do not follow this policy, we have a series of consequences, which include taking the device for the remainder of the school day. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call the front office, and we will deliver the message to your student. Likewise, if a student needs to call you at any time, they may get a pass to the front office and call you. We can give them a private space, as well, if this is preferred.
Backpack Policy
Backpacks are not allowed in classrooms. Bags and backpacks must remain in student lockers. Backpacks impede teachers and students from moving around the classroom safely. We must be able to move easily in order to teach and collaborate. Students will have plenty of time to go to their lockers between classes to get the materials they need.
Bathroom Policy
We will allow students to use the bathroom during class. Only 1 student will leave class at a time, with a hall pass. Also, students have 5 minutes to use the restroom and return to class. If a student takes more than 5 minutes, the teacher will have a private discussion with the student to remind them of the policy and to ensure that everything is okay. If a student is using the bathroom everyday, and teachers suspect work avoidance or some other issue, teachers will meet with that student privately to discuss concerns and seek more information. A counselor may also have this conversation with the student.
Official PE Dress Down
Be on the lookout for more information on dressing down from your student’s PE Teacher soon. All students will be required to wear the below described PCMS PE uniform each day they have PE. PE t-shirts cost $8.00 and we suggest you purchase one (or two) as soon as possible by logging into TouchBase.
PCMS issued PE t-shirt (purchase NOW for $8.00)

What is PCCO?
You might be asking yourself, “how can I get more involved at my child’s school?” Well the Pacific Crest Community Organization (PCCO) is our parent group at PCMS that teams-up to provide school support in many ways. This organization is akin to a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). We are a non-profit 501C (tax ID# 47-4312566) which was established many years ago, but due to Covid, the PCCO has not been as active. That is all about to change!
In the next several days, look for a dedicated email message from PCCO that will provide more specifics on how you can help support our school through donations and volunteering for school events, classroom helpers and much more. PCCO would love to have your suggestions as well. To become an approved volunteer, please visit the Volunteer page on the BLS District website to learn more and to apply.
Currently, the PCCO is current looking for a volunteer to fill their secretary board position. If interested, please contact Rendy Tucker at [email protected].

Hello, Pacific Crest Middle School community! I’m excited to be reaching out to you all for the first time this 2023-24 school year. My name is Sean Keating, and I am the principal here at PCMS. I taught high school English for 7 years before becoming a high school assistant principal. I’ve been an administrator now for 10 years. This will be my 5th year as a middle school principal.
My two kids will be attending Miller Elementary, right across the road, in the hopes they’ll want to be Pacific Crest Golden Eagles some day. My wife is a mental health therapist, serving clients here in Oregon.
I feel honored to work in education, as the yearly rhythms of the school year, the sound of kids laughing, and the excitement of learning all bring me deep joy. I am especially grateful to work with the faculty and staff here at Pacific Crest. These folks all care deeply about doing great work for our school. They hold high standards for themselves, and the level of teamwork here is high.
As a school, our mission is to foster the student learning experience so we are graduating creative thinkers, responsible decision-makers, and engaged community members. I will be centering this mission in our work as a staff and our collaboration as a community. We are also committed as a school and district to hear directly from all stakeholders–students, staff, and families–to ensure we’re serving the entire community with an informed, data-driven, equity lens.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful remainder of the summer and watch for more back to school communications in weeks ahead! I look forward to meeting you all soon! Thank you for entrusting us to work with you, side-by-side, in the sacred task of educating our children. We’re in this together.
Warmly,
Sean Keating
Weekly Communications
It is a goal of PCMS to keep families and students up-to-date and well informed. PCMS will continue to update you each Friday via this weekly blog. With that said, due to the start of the school today’s News from the Nest may seem to be an overwhelming amount of information. We highly encourage you take time to read it.
First Day of School Schedules
Throughout the District, the first day of school varies by grade level. Grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Wednesday, September 6. Our 6 grade families should have received a Welcome email earlier in the week which included a schedule. Grades 7-8 and 10-12 start Thursday, September 7. Refer to schedules below. This is to give sixth-graders a full day of orientation without other grades be on campus. Families of kindergartners should watch for a communication from their schools about their start date, which will be September 7 or September 8.
BLS Start and End Times (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)
Elementary: 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Middle school: 8:50 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
High school: 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Three Rivers School: 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Schools release 90 minutes early, on Wednesdays (starting September 13) for staff professional development time. Start and end times for our choice option schools are slightly modified and will be communicated directly to families.
Families may access free meals by filling out a free and reduced application with new income guidelines at bls.fyi/meals. Income guidelines have expanded, so all families are encouraged to apply.
Students attending one of the following community eligibility provision schools automatically qualify for free meals: Bear Creek Elementary, Ensworth Elementary, Pilot Butte Middle, Bend Tech Academy at Marshall, Three Rivers School, La Pine Elementary, La Pine Middle, La Pine High and Rosland Elementary.
Student Class Schedules
Student schedules will be accessible via ParentVue and StudentVue on September 1. Please note that the counseling department is still making substantial changes to them and will continue to tweak schedules until September 6. Please wait until that time for accurate viewing.
Building a master schedule is an intricate process that takes 100’s of hours of work. Even seemingly minor changes can have a dramatic effect. Due to its complexity, we are not accepting any schedule changes. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Family Access Network Assistance
Families are welcome to provide personal items for students (backpacks, water bottles, headphones, lunch boxes, etc.). If your family needs help securing a personal item, reach out to your school’s FAN advocate for support. Advocates will be available at the end of August. For specific questions, reach out to your school’s main offices.
Back-to-School Shopping| District Dress Code
With back-to-school coming up and many of you starting clothes shopping we are asking students and families to take a moment to review and reflect on our district Dress Code. These early conversations will help us be proactive and transparent in understanding school expectations and values, and will set everyone up for success, respect, and safety.
Within the first few weeks of school your student will participate in reviewing a lesson on the Dress Code. We encourage families to be part of this conversation alongside us! Feel free to review the Dress Code policy here. It is important that our whole learning community shares a common understanding and interpretation of the Dress Code in order to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment. Proactive conversation helps avoid misunderstandings, surprises, or unintended harm later. Thank you for your partnership, and happy shopping!
Fall Athletic Programs & Registration
Students will find a connection to athletic activities in which they can participate and find enjoyment during their middle school careers. We encourage parents to actively support their children in both their academic and athletic pursuits. For information regarding our Fall Athletic programs click the below link.
It is highly recommended that families purchase the annual optional iPad insurance for $30 for each of their students with a family cap of $60. Insurance is effective for the current school year. Accidental damage, cracked screens, liquid submersion, fire, flood, theft and vandalism in and out of school are covered. Purposeful damage or lost iPads are not covered. There is no deductible fee for the first claim, $50 deductible fee for each claim thereafter. Insurance can be purchased at the time of iPad deployment or online (at the beginning of the school year). After this period, iPads must be inspected at the school for damage before insurance can be purchased. iPad insurance is not needed for grades K-5. Accidental breaks and damage will be covered at no cost. Please refer to BLS iPad Insurance webpage for more information.
Reminder for families that during regular school hours, all visitors to schools must report directly to the school office with a valid drivers license or government issued ID to obtain a visitor badge that must be worn at all times while on campus. All visitors must report to the school office and sign in and out through the visitor management system. Learn more about visitor policy.
Volunteers
Unlike the past couple of years, we invite our PCMS community members to volunteer for a number of opportunities throughout the school year. To do so, please refer to the BLS Volunteer webpage for all the details of become a volunteer.
Transportation Registration
Does your student plan to ride the bus this fall? If so, make sure to register them for transportation as soon as possible.
Primaria: 7:45 a.m. a 2:15 p.m.
Escuela secundaria: 8:45 a.m. a 3:45 p.m.
Escuela Preparatoria: 8:45 a.m. a 3:45 p.m.
Escuela Three Rivers: 8 a.m. a 2:30 p.m.
This will be my final “News From the Nest” message to you of the 2022-23 school year. I can’t believe I just typed those words. It seems like only yesterday that I interviewed for this position, met our teachers and staff, and welcomed our 6th graders into the building on the first day of school.
We’ve learned a lot this year, which is a great thing because learning is our core business. Among other things, we learned that our students were deeply affected by two years of school closures and social distancing. To address this, we focused on three key areas this year: rebuilding our systems, rebuilding our community, and rekindling the student experience. Here are some tangible highlights to illustrate these themes:
—We tightened our discipline systems, leaning heavily on a 4-to-1 positive-to-negative behavior feedback ratio, created a student behavior/intervention database, and built a Tier 2 (moderate) behavior and academic support team as well as a Tier 3 (critical) support team. These teams made tangible gains for all focal students.
—We debated and collaboratively developed school-wide policies. Because these policies represent a plurality of voices, they continue to hold strong, and we continue to enforce them every moment of every day. Many of these policies have been adopted by peer schools and the central office as models for effective middle-level behavior management.
—We brought back dances, field trips, assemblies, back to school nights, open houses, family nights, principal coffees, promotions, field days, and spirit weeks. These make for more work, but they are 100% worth the effort. The more we can open our doors to you, the more we function as a coherent learning community. Expect even more of this next year.
There’s more to share, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll stop here. Thank you for your partnership. If you’re moving on, I wish you the best, and I hope we’ve made good memories for you and your child. If you’re coming back next year, have an amazing summer, and we’ll see you in September for another adventure.
Let’s continue our good work together–for the sake of our children.
Sean
Don’t Forget to Pick UP Medication
Please remember to pick up your child’s medication from school by Friday, June 16th or they will be properly disposed of. Schools are not allowed to retain medication for students over the summer. Parents need to come into the attendance office to pick up medication. It is against school policy to send medication home with students. Every year we try very hard to ensure student medications get picked up, but every year we end up throwing out valuable prescriptions…including inhalers.

June 14 | Full day of School for PCMS Students | 8:50 AM – 3:45 PM
June 15 | Leaving the Nest | 8th Grade Promotion & Reception | 6:00 – 7:15 PM | PCMS Gym
June 16 | Last Day of School |Early Release at 2:15 PM | 8th Grade Optional
It’s a BUSY time in the nest! We have summer weather (and energetic behavior), a district-wide shortage of subs, end-of-year planning, and hiring–all happening at the same time! This, of course, is to be expected at a large, public middle school. It’s all good–just sharing the news.
A few months ago our students took the Oregon Health Survey. All 6th, 8th, and 11th graders in Oregon take the survey. The survey looks at mental health, risky behaviors, and environmental factors. I’m happy to report that PCMS students are doing pretty well, compared to state averages at least. It doesn’t mean we still don’t have growth areas, but, as a community, we’re doing a pretty good job helping our students feel safe and feel like they matter. If you’re interested in more granular detail, please reach out to me.
I hope you all have an awesome weekend with your family. Two more weeks! We got this!

June 6 | Spring Music | Band, Choir, Orchestra | @ 7pm | PCMS Gym
Yesterday we hosted hundreds of students and family members at our 5th Grade Family Night. It was a success: people learned a lot, students lowered their anxiety, and excitement has grown for the new year! I’m thrilled to get to know our newest Golden Eagles.
This week we also made an important decision: 8th graders will get their own field day. On Thursday, June 15 (their last required day of attendance), 8th graders will practice their promotion ceremony, get their yearbooks, have their own field day experience, and promote later that evening.
The next day–Friday, June 16–is OPTIONAL for 8th graders. We encourage our 8th graders to start their summer a day early! On this day, our 6th and 7th graders will have their field day, and school releases at 2:15 PM.
Thank you for all your support as we reach the end of the year. Have a great Memorial Day weekend with your family, and please remember why we honor this day.

Math Bypass Test for 6th & 7th Graders
Is your student excelling in math or has your child talked about wanting more of a challenge in math? Maybe the class teacher has indicated your child should take a placement level test for math next year? This FAQ is designed to answer most of the questions that parents have regarding this process.
How many students are typically prepared to accelerate a level in math?
In the 22-23 school year, less than 3% of students assessed on the bypass test showed proficiency to accelerate a level in math. To skip an entire level, students should be able to justify and generalize the big math ideas in the grade level they are by passing, not simply complete formulas.
What assessment will be used or how will teachers and administrators decide if my child is ready to accelerate a level of math?
While formal assessments will play a key role in determining the appropriateness of your child being promoted a grade level in math, classroom success is a key marker as well. Your child should also be consistently receiving grades of an A or Mastery. It is appropriate to discuss with your child’s teacher if this is a recommended step.
We will use the nationally-normed screening assessment called I-Ready. This assessment is designed to compare thousands of students’ content knowledge and application from across the country and provide a rating in four math categories (Numbers and Operations, Geometry, Measurement and Data, . and Algebra and Algebraic Thinking) Students must show that they have knowledge of the grade level they plan to skip in all four categories.
This assessment will be given during the week of June 5th at all middle school locations and will be given the first part of their day while iPads are still fully charged. Your child’s middle school will coordinate the testing so you do not need to do anything but be sure that their iPad is charged the night before.
Tuesday , June 6 at Pacific Crest Middle School / 9 AM
*** Please register your student HERE to take the assessment on June 6th
The assessment will take your child approximately 60-80 minutes. The second data point that may be used is the state mathematics test, OSAS (Oregon State Assessment System.) These together, will recommend your child’s placement. Ultimately parents together with their child’s middle school teacher will make the decision based on this data.
Can students take math online through Bend La Pine this summer in order to prepare to skip a grade level in middle school? Is this recommended?
Bend LaPine Online offers many courses to students to take during the year or over the summer. While there is an option for students to take the course during the summer, it does not guarantee placement in the next course in the fall. Student schedules require a great deal of work over the summer by staff members. If your child successfully completes a Math course with a B or above, then a new course placement will be considered.
Are there any opportunities for TAG students in math outside of the math classroom, any additional programs, etc?
There is an easy to use and free web site called openmiddle.com that has some deep thinking and challenging problems for students. The program goes through Calculus so students can try problems above and below their grade level. These problems will give you a sense if your child is truly ready to skip a grade.
Is there any other information families should know about accelerating a level of math in middle school?
Parents, talk to your child and think about why they want to skip a grade level of math. What is your child’s math experience? Do they see themselves as a successful mathematician? Can they persevere when under productive struggle? Missing a year of middle school math may put students on a path that curtails their enjoyment of a subject they once enjoyed. This is a decision that parents and their child should regard carefully. We do understand that there are students truly ready to skip a grade and we want to identify those students.
If you have further questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us.
I hope you had an awesome week. It was another fun week in The Nest. Students toured downtown art galleries, tested water samples at Mirror Pond, and continued to power through our state tests. Next week we have many athletes competing at the regional track meet and will host families for 5th Grade Family Night. It’s an exciting time of year!
Have a great weekend with your family!

Upcoming Lockdown Drill
On Friday, June 2nd we will be running our spring lockdown drill at PCMS. All the drills we do are not only required by Oregon law, but prepare staff, students and our community on how to respond in the event of an emergency. We take these drills seriously, and we expect our students to take them seriously as well. Our students and staff were trained in the fall when we did our first lockdown drill, and students will be getting a refresher on protocols by watching a Standard Response Protocol video in Advisory next week, and subsequently discussing specific safety plans with our School Resource Officer. During our drill, Bend Police Department will be on site to support our efforts. You can find more information about Standard Response Protocol (SRP) in the following guides.

8th Grade iPad Returns
All 8th graders will turn in their iPad and charging brick/cord on Monday, June 12th. They will be given full instructions for this process prior to the 12th. If they DO NOT turn in their charger a fine will be placed on their account for $30. Please note, we cannot accept any chargers other than the ones we gave out. They will get new iPads in High school.
7th and 8th graders who have a 6th generation iPad will also be turning in their iPad that week as that model is being retired. They will receive a new iPad in the fall. We will notify these students prior to the last week of school.
Contact Marni Hanna if you have any questions regarding the above at [email protected].

Hey, Golden Eagle families! I hope you’re enjoying this beautiful weather!
We’ve had a nice week here at PCMS. Our Pacific Crest Community Organization helped us serve delicious coffee, snacks, and meals throughout this past week in celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week.
Both my parents were teachers, and I think teachers just might be my favorite people in the world. Teachers make the world go around! If you have a moment, please send a three-sentence email of thanks to one of your student’s teachers. These might seem like small gestures, but they truly matter and feel so good. The letters and emails I received from my students and parents over the years are some of my most favorite possessions.
And Happy Mothers Day! Enjoy the sunshine with people you love!

Many of you have already met her before, but here’s a formal introduction to Julie Ketsdever, our new community secretary. Welcome, Julie! She has a lot of experience in the district, and we are lucky to have her. She’s also the proud mom of a PCMS 8th grader!
Thank you to those who came out last night for “Be the Boss of Your Brain” here at the PCMS library. Carrie Bonnett gave an informative and influential presentation (as usual). I encourage all of you to attend one of her talks when you can. We’ll do another one next year, for sure. I’ve already made some changes in my own life and for my kids to help “make the invisible visible.”
Have a great weekend, everyone! Hopefully the sun peeks through!

Friday, June 16 – OPTIONAL for 8th Grade
On Thursday night, June 15, our 8th graders will process across the stage in our gym, celebrating their transition from middle to high school. We consider this the final activity for our 8th graders.
The following day, Friday, June 16, will be a field day activity devoted just to our 6th and 7th graders. While we cannot force 8th graders to stay home (and we will welcome them if they do attend), we are asking our 8th graders to start their summer vacation one day early. The commencement ceremony will be their final school activity.
Please let us know if you have any questions. The other middle schools are also making Friday, June 16 optional for 8th graders.
