Principal’s Hello

Hey there, Golden Eagle families!

It’s been a great last week here in the nest before our week-long break. Our 7th graders played against a staff team in ultimate frisbee, we over-flowed our gift drive box, had a planetarium in our gym for 8th graders, and had our first sit-down meeting with our PCCO board to celebrate our successful Fill the Nest fundraising campaign! Thank you for doing your part to make this place special!

We’re a great school (in my opinion) because our families are so committed, and we are only going to keep evolving and getting better. Speaking of evolving, we’ve added 7 support groups this school year for our student body: affinity groups for students of color and LGBTQ-identifying students and allies, an executive functioning group, a classroom disruptors intervention, and three social-emotional skills groups: anxiety, social dynamics, and family change.

Our hard-working, talented staff are thankful, as ever, for your positive, team-based partnership. We are grateful to you! Let’s keep this special thing going!

Warmly,

Sean

Affinity Group Starting Soon

At Pacific Crest, clubs are for students, by students – meaning that we have clubs that are born out of student interest. There are a few exceptions to this rule, as the Yearbook Club, National Junior Honor Society, and PRISM clubs are adult-led in order to provide some continuity from year-to-year. In this same way, Pacific Crest would like to offer an Affinity Circle group for our students of color. This Affinity Circle group will focus on providing a safe and supportive place for students to discuss their shared experiences. If this is applicable to your student, please talk with them about whether or not they would like to be a part of an Affinity Circle group, or if you would like to be contacted for more information please click here.

NEW Program | Sources of Strength

Pacific Crest Middle School has started a Sources of Strength program this year. Sources of Strength is a student-led program that engages all students and adults in school in sharing messages about hope, help, and strength. Sources of Strength prevents suicide, violence including bullying, and substance use.

A Thankfulness Challenge is a Sources of Strength campaign you can help model at home with your child.

Here’s 4 ways to practice gratitude:

  1. Think: Think about 1 thing you are grateful for each day for  21 days. Aim to do this around the same time each day, like when you wake up or go to bed.
  2. Speak: Share your gratitude with others. Tell your child, your child’s teachers, or your friends or partner what you appreciate about them.
  3. Listen: Listen to others as an act of gratitude. Show you are listening to what they say, which shows they matter to you.
  4. Write: Write your gratitudes for 21 days in this Sources of Strength Thankfulness Journal. Writing gratitudes for 21 days is proven to shift thinking to be more positive.

Practicing gratitude can help us view ourselves, others, and what’s happening around us in a more positive way.  Sharing your gratitude with others spreads the benefits to those around us as well.

Sources of Strength in Bend-La Pine Schools is supported by Healthy Schools, our partnership with Deschutes County to make sure our schools promote health for every student.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle families,

I hope you have a great three-day weekend and find a way to honor our veterans.

We had another great week here at PCMS. We hosted a well-attended parent info night on executive functioning. Our teachers met to discuss ways to better support our students. We started planning a winter assembly. And we added some important dates to our spring calendar, like our high school visits, schedule forecasting, and 5th Grade Family Night. (Stay tuned for specifics.) The year is moving swiftly!

The mountains look so beautiful from campus. Students are psyched for the snow! Take care, and enjoy the long weekend.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle families,

Happy Friday! Next week we have a four-day week in honor of our veterans. If you are a veteran, like members of my own family were, thank you for your service.

This week was a ton of fun! We had an ultimate frisbee tournament in 7th grade, Halloween (of course), and a hilarious fall spirit week. Here’s Anne-Marie’s and my effort for Thursday, “Twin Day”:

Today we also hosted our first “Coffee With the Principal,” which is always so informative for us. You all have unique perspectives that are important for us to hear, which help us get better as a school. As a result of today’s coffee, I’d like to explore ways to educate students and parents about healthy and effective iPad use, and I’d also like to see if we can incorporate some tutoring opportunities for our students.

It takes a village to make this work, so thank you for taking the time to share your ideas with us. See the blurb below about healthy technology use. Our kids need us to teach them this skill, and we can start by modeling healthy tech use ourselves. (Thank you to Monica Desmond, our public health specialist, for providing this valuable info.)

Lastly, please consider attending “Get The Brain on Board,” an introduction to executive functioning by local executive functioning coach (and PCMS parent) Carrie Bonnett. Carrie presented this info here at PCMS last spring, so this is back by popular demand. She will present in our library, and the workshop begins at 6:00 PM. I recommend it!

Thanks, as always, for your partnership, and see you out in the community!

CORRECTION: PCMS Gives Back to our Local Community

A couple of weeks ago, in this blog, we shared a couple of ways to give back to our local community. Below is updated information and dates for these events. Give…it’s a good feeling!

The Giving Plate’s Jingle Christmas: PCMS is excited to team up with The Giving Plate’s Jingle Store to spread the holiday spirit to those in need by hosting a Toy Drive to collect toys for children ages 0 – 17 who deserve a magical Christmas. We invite you to join us in making a difference this holiday season by donating new, unwrapped toys to the PCMS Main Office from Monday, 11/6 through Friday 12/1. Here are some helpful practical shopping tips. Let’s come together as a school community to bring smiles to the faces of children in Central Oregon. Your generosity can brighten a child’s Christmas and warm their hearts. PCMS Toy Drive Flyer

The Giving Plate’s Food Drive: Another way that our community can give back is to donate non-perishable food items to support those in need this holiday season. We are launching this program in advisory classes on Monday, December 4 and will be collecting items until Friday, December 15. The Giving Plate will bring their truck to PCMS to load up all of the food items that are donated to help stock their food pantry for many to enjoy.

Technology in Education: Finding balance for back-to-school success

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, technology isn’t just a tool; it can be a gateway to enhanced learning experiences. We strive to make screen time purposeful and beneficial, maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline activities.

As a parent, you play a pivotal role in differentiating between technology for educational purposes and recreational screen time.

Here are some suggestions to establish healthy technology habits:

  • Open Communication: Have an open dialogue with your child about technology use, its benefits, and potential challenges.
  • Tech-Free Zones: Designate areas and times at home for focused learning, free from distractions.
  • Homework Routine: Encourage a consistent homework routine that includes breaks and offline activities.
  • Personal Tech Limits: Set limits on personal device use, ensuring a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
  • Lead by Example: Model responsible technology use by practicing mindful screen time, engaging in face-to-face conversations, and prioritizing outdoor activities.
  • Monitor Social Media Use: Guide your child in using platforms responsibly, emphasizing privacy settings, respectful communication, and critical thinking.
  • Be Aware of Bullying Behavior: Help your child recognize the importance of kindness and empathy online. If they encounter bullying behavior, encourage them to talk to you or a trusted adult.

For further insights and information, we encourage you to engage in an open dialogue with your school and teachers. Additionally, you can explore valuable parent tips and frequently asked questions on the “For Parents” tab at Common Sense Media and the parent guides at Connect Safely.

Athletic Updates

Wednesday evening, the Pacific Crest 8th Grade Football team faced Cascade in the first annual Bend City Middle School Championship. After a scoreless first quarter, PCMS scored to take an 8-0 halftime lead.  Cascade responded with a score of their own to tie the game where it remained until less than 8 minutes remaining.  PCMS took control of the game in the 4th quarter scoring on three straight drives, defeating Cascade 30-8.  Led by a loud student section dressed in gold, the Golden Eagles finished the season 7-0.

The 7th Grade Football team faced the Pilot Butte Giants in the first annual City Football Championship game on Wednesday. It was a tough matchup as the Giants beat Cascade the week prior, and the only loss of the season for the Golden Eagles was to Cascade mid-season. It was a defensive battle, with the Golden Eagles only leading by 2 at the half, 8-6. The Eagles offense stepped it up in the 2nd half, rushing for another touchdown, and kicking a second PAT to go up 16-6. Pilot Butte answered with another long TD run and PAT bringing the score to 16-14. A tough stand by the Golden Eagle defense forced a Giant turnover with only 3 minutes to go as the Golden Eagles grinded the clock winning the City Championship. The Golden Eagle kicking game proved to be a deciding factor in this victory, as well as during much of the season, hitting 8 of 9 PAT attempts overall.

PCMS Wrestling registrations open November 6th and will close January 12th. To register, please go to the PCMS Athletics page and complete the steps listed. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Bend Parks and Recreation Girls Middle School Basketball registration is currently underway on the BRPD website. Registration will close on Dec. 20th OR  when teams are full —whichever comes first. Space is limited so please sign up as soon as possible. The season will begin Tuesday, Jan. 9

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle families,

I hope you’ve had a great week and are enjoying the longer weekend with your middle schooler.

Thank you so, so much to all those who contributed to our Fill the Nest fundraiser. We raised $8,000 last week! You all are amazing!

Remember that our Fill the Nest campaign is the only fundraiser we do all year. We don’t like to bug you about money, so we do this one time, at the start of the year, to help out our teachers. (See below for more info.)

We’re psyching up for Spirit Week! And swing by for a cup of coffee with me on Friday. I’ll be in the cafeteria from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM to talk about our start to the year and to hear your questions and ideas.

Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

Sean

Please consider making a one-time, tax-deductible, financial gift (tax ID# 47-4312566) to the PCCO “Fill Our Nest” Giving Campaign.

We could certainly use everyone’s help to reach our goal. No matter the amount you are able to contribute, it helps. Emergency Alerts

If you have not done so, we highly recommend that parents, guardians and students alike sign up for to receive BL Connect text messages which will alert subscribers regarding evacuation, lockdown, emergency or weather-related event that calls for cancellation of a school day or changes to school day start or end times.

What are Delays, Early Release or Closures?

  • School Closure: Schools are closed for the day due to weather or emergency. In this scenario, the school building will not be used. Unless otherwise noted, all evening meetings and activities are cancelled.
  • Delayed Start: School will have a delayed start. Most often, this is a two-hour delay. In this scenario, buses will run two hours later than normal schedule and will drive slowly, adjusting to conditions and may be delayed.
  • Early Release: Students who ride the bus can be released early in order to give the buses extra time to complete routes.
  • Early Closure: Schools may be closed early due to weather or emergency. In this scenario, the school building will not be used. Unless otherwise noted, all evening meetings and activities are cancelled, including KidsInc.

Always refer to the BLS Website for the most up-to-date information regarding the above.

  • Thursday, 11/2: Twin Day
  • Friday, 11/3: Beach Day

Here again are the costume guidelines:

Athletic Updates

This past Wednesday, at Mountain View High School, PCMS played Sky View in the first round of the playoffs. PCMS took the opening play for a touchdown, and followed it up on their next possession, again scoring on the first play. Leading 34-0 at the half, PCMS scored again in the 3rd quarter to make it 42-0. The final score was 42-8 in favor of the Golden Eagles.  Next week, Pacific Crest will face Cascade for the league championship.

This last week of 7th grade volleyball was exciting. Our season ended with solid competition from La Pine. Our B team lost a close match, but our A team prevailed. Overall, we combined from 34 aces — with two players having five or more aces — 17 digs and 21 kills. It will be exciting to see them grow in the off season as many of them will be participating in club. And a big shout out to parents and families for participating and helping with our end of season party.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

It was quite a day here in the nest! Our three-week fall spirit competition concluded today with our advisory door decorating contest. Below a a few door pics for your enjoyment. Lots of kids wore black and gold or dressed in a costume for the dance this evening, including Count Keating. Speaking of the dance, we had nearly 400 students enjoy music, dancing, food, Bingo and gym activities. Those who donated items and/or volunteered for the many jobs needed for a successful event, we appreciate your support. Thank you!

This week our teachers also continued our work on aligning our curriculum and instruction to our priority standards, a 5-year, district-wide project that culminates in a standards-based instruction, feedback, and assessment system in the fall of 2026. It’s important work that helps us articulate high-leverage learning outcomes and create a more equitable grading system.

One last thing: Please see the link below for our Fill the Nest giving campaign. This is the only time of the year when we ask for financial help. Our goal is to raise $20,000 this year, and so far we’ve only raised about $3,000. This money goes straight back to classrooms to benefit our students and teachers. Anything helps, and thank you for considering!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend with your families. Enjoy this beautiful fall weather.

Sean

PCMS Gives Back to our Local Community

Looking for an opportunity, or two, to pass along comfort and joy this holiday season? Once again, our WEB Leaders are partnering with The Giving Plate to provide food and to support the upcoming Giving Plate’s Jingle Christmas. The two giving options begin on Monday, November 6 and end on Friday, December 8.

The first option is a “non-perishable” food drive which serves local residents in Bend. Below is a list of needed items. Donations will be collected at PCMS in the Upper Nest starting Monday, November 6. The grade level that collects the most food items will receive a surprise!

The second option is to donate to the Giving Plate’s Jingle Christmas. The Jingle Store is an annual, free community event where kids can come and “shop” for gifts to give to those they love. Here are some helpful practical shopping tips. There will be a specific collection container for donated gifts in the PCMS Upper Nest starting on Monday, November 6. We had overall individual race winners of 8th grade boys, 7th grade boys, and 6th grade boys and girls. We also had individual second place winners in 7th grade boys and girls and 8th grade girls.

This past Wednesday at Sky View, the 8th grade football team wasted little time, taking an 8-0 lead on a four play drive.  Later in the first half, they scored again on the first play of the drive.  With the score 30-0 at halftime, the Golden Eagles now 4-0, proved too much for their opponent. The Golden Eagles came out on top with a score of 30-16. Next week’s game is at High Desert at 5:00.

The 7th grade football team held on to win 8-0 vs Sky View on Wednesday in front of a Pom-Pom waving home field crowd (thanks to our fans!). Great tackling led to the shutout, and sound blocking resulted in no sacks given up on the day. Zero Golden Eagle turnovers also helped in the win, giving us a 3-1 record, tied for 1st place. Please come cheer us on next week as we play High Desert at home!

Our 7th grade volleyball team had success serving this week. On Tuesday, they had 45 aces and another 25 aces on Thursday. We are making progress on serve receive, getting more digs and adding pass, set, kill into our matches. We have also started playing with a Libero, who is doing a great job. We would love your support at our next home game on Thursday.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

What beautiful fall weather we are having! So many students are going outside for recess — it’s awesome!

Today, we began our fall spirit competition in advisory. It’s a two-part competition: students decorate classroom doors in a fall theme and also wear school colors for the next three Fridays. On Friday the 20th, the culminating day of the competition, a panel of judges will tally the number of students with school spirit during the three-week competition as well assess the creativity, artistry, and engineering of the door decorations. (We are using a 0-4 rubric.)

The winning advisory gets a special party and treat on the Monday after the dance. Remember that students are allowed to wear costumes to school for the dance and for Halloween. Please ensure the costume follows our guidelines below and that faces are not covered.

Thank you, and have a great weekend!

Fall Conferences – Wed, 10/25 and Thur, 10/26

Fall conferences are upon us! We know you just met your teacher at Back to School Night, so it might feel like these are coming on too soon.

Our fall conferences are 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, 10/25 and 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, 10/26.

Look at your student’s grades. Are they pretty good — mostly A’s and B’s? If so, you should not fret about scheduling a conference. If, however, your student is struggling in a class, then meeting with that teacher might be a good idea.

Our fall conferences are 15 minutes long, just enough time to have a substantive conversation about your student’s performance in that class and to learn how you can support your student at home.

In the spring, we plan to have open house conferences, where you can drop in on any teacher to chat. For these fall conferences, however, we are focused on one student and one class at a time. Space is very limited, and, again, we are hoping to primarily serve the families of students struggling in a class. Thank you for understanding.

In next Friday’s “News From the Nest,” we will include a link for you to sign up for a conference.

Halloween Dance | Friday, October 20, 2023

Parents, we could really use your help supporting this event by either donating an item and/or volunteering at the event. Click here now to view the Sign-up.

Also, students who attend this event will remain at the dance until 6:00 PM. Students will not be released early unless it is pre-arranged by sending an email to Deb Mullen at [email protected] no later than noon on Friday, 10/20.

  • DATE: Friday, October 20
  • TIME: 4:00 – 6:00 PM
  • ADMISSION & MEAL $5.00 | Includes pizza meal (gluten free options will be available)
  • FREE ACTIVITIES: Dancing | Bingo | Gym Activities| Photo Booths

Student Rules for Attending HS Football Games

  • All students entering a high school football game must show a school-issued identification (can be a digital image on a phone). Students without an identification will NOT be permitted to enter.
  • Students are encouraged NOT to bring bags into the stadium. Students entering with bags and/or backpacks will have them searched before entering the stadium.
  • All middle school students wanting to attend a high school football game MUST attend with their parent or guardian.
  • All students MUST behave in a way that is safe and appropriate for the game. If a warning is issued to a student due to poor behavior, the student identification will be recorded (scanned) as the first offense. A second offense can result in the student’s removal from the stadium.

Golden Eagle Sports Highlights

Eighth grade volleyball had an epic week with clean sweep victories for all levels both Tuesday and Thursday. We are playing great volleyball right now, and we are ready to take on the High Desert powerhouse next week.

Our 7th grade volleyball team had their first away challenge. We took our first C team loss to LaPine, but our B team came back to win. Our team continues to keep working hard and improving.

On Tuesday, our cross country runners had a meet at Three Rivers K-8 against Bend International, Cascade Middle School, Realms Middle School, and Westside Village. Our runners placed first in 6th grade boys and girls, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade boys and girls. They also placed second in 7th grade girls. We had overall individual race winners of 8th grade boys, and individual second place winners in every race.

On Wednesday, the 8th grade football team hosted Pilot Butte in their lone home game of the season. For the 8th grade team, the last chance to play at their school field was a special one.  The Golden Eagles raced out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. Building off of that momentum, the score was 36-0 at halftime, where it remained for the rest of the game. Led by three turnovers, PCMS was able to stop Pilot Butte and continue their strong start to the season at 3-0. The attention shifts to next week’s game at Sky View.

The 7th grade football team lost its first game this week, splitting a two-game series with Cascade. The Golden Eagles learned some valuable lessons in the defeat and are looking toward next week’s matchup at home against Sky View Middle School.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Happy Friday, and thank you for another great week at PCMS! Our kids looked sharp and smiled big for picture day, and it was great to see all of you at Back to School Night! Thank you also to PCCO for hosting the information session.

This was an exciting week: our new registrar started, we added soccer goals to the playground, and our athletes put in some good effort on the playing fields. Overall, students are doing well in class too, as evidenced by the classroom norms they created with their teachers. Here are a few examples:

As you can see, students know what is and is not appropriate behavior in classrooms. They’re doing a good job following our expectations.

Thank you for your teamwork! We couldn’t do this without you! Have a great weekend with your families.

Halloween Dance & Social

It’s that time of year when students start thinking about costumes for Halloween. Our annual Halloween social is October 20 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. We will provide more information soon. Please make sure your student’s costume aligns with our expectations:

Message From a Small-Business Owner at The Grove

I am reaching out today to get some help with some of the students behavior that has been taking place before and after school. A lot of the students like to hang out at the market hall, but don’t seem to understand or want to adhere to the rules that have been placed to keep businesses and other patrons safe and happy.

Since the beginning of the school year, we have had to constantly remind students about:

– Not riding their bikes or scooters on the patio.
– Park or lock their devices at a designated bike rack.
– Clean up after themselves.
– Respect the space by keeping volume at a minimum.
– Be a patron and not loiter.
– Respect the staff.

I have had to single out a few students in particular and speak with them about the expectations and rules here, and unfortunately, they don’t seem to understand. Yesterday I had to send a student home and ask them to not return.

The whole market hall will be having a meeting in the next week to discuss whether we will allow unsupervised students from the middle and high school, to be allowed on the property during the week.

Rules for Summit HS Football Games

The SHS athletic director wanted us to share these rules with you:

  • We do not allow backpacks or skateboards in the stadium.
  • We are not be able to store items inside the stadium so it is best if they are kept at home.
  • We do not allow outside food or drink in the stadium.
  • We do not allow middle school students without their parent/guardian.
  • Students will be expected to sit in the bleachers.
  • Students are not allowed to reenter the stadium once they leave.
  • The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Digital tickets are available for purchase now.

Golden Eagle Athletic Highlights

This week in sports, it was a battle for the West Side!

Wednesday evening, the 7th grade PCMS football team racked up another win after an 18-8 victory over west-side rival, Cascade Middle School. The Golden Eagles pulled ahead 18-0 before the end of the first half. Turnovers, combined with a strong Cascade offense, made for a tight 4th quarter with Pacific Crest’s defense holding strong in the closing seconds of the game with Cascade at the PCMS 20-yard line. The 7th grade team is continuing to improve on both offense and defense, holding their first two opponents to a single score each game.

The 8th grade football team also faced rival Cascade in a battle for the West Side. Cascade came out and got a quick score to make it 6-0, and PCMS responded with a score of their own to tie the game.  Both teams scored again in the second quarter and went into halftime tied at 12-12.  PCMS took control in the second half, winning the turnover battle and racked up touchdowns through the air and on the ground.  With 22 unanswered points in the second half, PCMS was victorious, with the final score 34-12.  Next week, PCMS hosts Pilot Butte at 5 pm on Wednesday in their lone home game of the season.

On the volleyball court, it was a good week for both teams. Against Cascade, our 7th grade Team C won one game and Team B won three games. Our 8th grade team lost their first set but came back and won two sets to take the match. There were some key hits in the front row and our serving was much better. Against Pilot Butte, the 8th grade team made a complete team effort and had an amazing clean sweep for team A. Many players were challenged with playing up a level and they succeeded expectations, and they are improving everyday.

Our PCMS cross country runners had a meet at Cascade Middle School against Pilot Butte, Bend International, Three Rivers, and Cascade. Our runners placed first in 6th grade boys and girls, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade boys and girls. They also placed second in 7th grade girls. We also had overall individual race winners of 6th grade boys, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade boys and girls.

Way to go, Golden Eagles!

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Happy sunny fall Friday!

This week we exited the building in record time for our first monthly fire drill. Students were calm and compliant and safely moved to our evacuation zones. Next week, we introduce our student clubs (ask your students about them!) and reintroduce our golden feathers and gold mine student store.

The golden feathers and gold mine store are part of our school-wide positive behavior support plan. Students earn golden feathers by being safe, respectful, and responsible in their classes. They can buy items with the feathers in our student store or snack bar, or save them up with friends for bigger items, like a pizza party. All golden feathers also go into a monthly movie raffle, where a student from each grade level earns a couple tickets to the movies. Fun times!

Next week, please join us at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 28, for Back to School Night! This is a chance to meet your student’s teachers, see the school, and go through your student’s daily schedule.

Also, don’t forget that right before Back to School Night, at 5:30 PM, is a PCCO parent event. Here you can learn all about our Pacific Crest Community Organization, the non-profit group that helps our school immensely!

We look forward to seeing you! Have an awesome weekend!

We Are Pacific Crest | A Survey for 7th & 8th Grade Parents / Guardians

At Pacific Crest Middle School, we believe that parents play a critical role in each child’s educational experience. You know the strengths and interests of your child best, and we would like to use this information to create an experience at Pacific Crest that is engaging and thoughtful. We are asking 7th and 8th grade parents and guardians to please take a few moments to complete this survey, which will be received by your child’s counselor. Please note that 6th grade parents completed this survey a couple of weeks ago, so no need to do it again.

District-Wide Bias Lesson

We are working hard to ensure every student feels a sense of belonging and inclusion in our learning community. Within the next week, your student will receive a lesson on bias: what is bias and how does it impact us all; how do we interrupt bias when we see, hear, or experience it; and how do we report incidents of bias or hate that have caused harm to ourselves or others in our school community?

Families are an important part of this conversation! Wondering how you can learn more or be involved? First, feel free to review the entire standards-based lesson here. Next, we encourage you to talk about this subject with your student at home, both before and after the lesson. Here is an optional resource to support your family conversation. Last, let us know how it went and what your child had to say about learning on the topic, or how it impacted your family—share any optional feedback here to help improve the lesson for future versions at our school and across the district.

It is important that our whole learning community shares common language, knowledge, and the skills necessary to meet our expectations for safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environments. Thank you for engaging in this learning with us. Bias affects us all; and each student, staff, and family member is important in this community conversation.

Thank you for your partnership.

………………..

Golden Eagle Sports Highlights

This was an exciting first week for athletics!

Our PCMS cross country runners had an awesome first meet against Sky View, High Desert, and Three Rivers. We won 6th grade boys and girls, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade girls. We placed second in 7th grade girls and third in 8th grade boys. We also had overall individual race winners of 6th grade girls and boys, 7th grade boys, and 8th grade boys.

On the football field, both 7th and 8th grade began their season at Crook County. For 7th grade, the defense had a great showing, causing six Cowboy turnovers. Excellent tackling and swarming the ball led to holding the Cowboys to a single touchdown for the evening. The Golden Eagle offense had a slow start, but quickly adjusted, resulting in two touchdowns scored, with an end score of 16-6 in our favor. The 8th grade Golden Eagles jumped out to a 22-0 halftime lead with a balanced passing and running attack.  The defense was exceptional and continued building the lead in the second half to go up 28-0 before giving up a late touchdown with the final score 28-6.

On the volleyball court, it was a good first day for both teams. Eighth grade split with High Desert, and they are our toughest competition. Against Sky View, our 7th grade C and B teams won two of their games, and our A team won one. Overall, all of our teams were impressive with their passing and we had some strong hits to score several key points.

It was a great first showing for all of our teams. We look forward to next week when on Tuesday, September 26, both volleyball teams will matchup against Cascade. On that same day, our cross country team will attend a meet at Cascade with Pilot Butte, Bend International School, Three Rivers, and Cascade. On Wednesday, September 27, our 7th grade football team will host Cascade, while 8th grade will head over to Cascade. Finally, on Thursday, September 28, while 7th grade has a BYE, 8th grade volleyball will play against Pilot Butte on the road. We look forward to seeing our supporters there. Go Golden Eagles!

Adult Workshop with Author, Chris Balme

Chris Balme is the author of the book, Finding the Magic in Middle School. Parents and guardians are invited to join him on Tuesday, October 10, from 4:30 – 6:30 PM at the Unitarian church on Skyliners, across from PCMS. The goal of the evening is to connect with teachers, administrators, mental health professionals, and parents around how we raise our adolescents together in this community.

Click on this flyer for more information regarding the workshop at the UUFCO. Following the workshop, participants are welcome to stay for the parent-directed talk that Chris will give from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. There will be more time to connect and refresh ourselves in the interim.

Attendance Does Matter

Every day at school matters. Good attendance is considered 95% or higher (missing fewer than 9 days of school all year). Attending every day helps your child to:

  • Reduce stress
  • Connect with friends and teachers
  • Prevent falling behind in classes

Getting into the habit of daily attendance is important. This habit building starts now.
Read this letter from Dr. Amy Yillik. The letter covers 5 tips for how to support your child’s attendance, what’s going on at this stage of development, why attendance matters, and where to go for help.

………………………

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Happy first full week Friday! Look at this happy crew:

A HUGE PCMS GOLDEN EAGLE STAFF WELCOME!

We’re delighted to finish our first full week with your kiddos. And we have some exciting things on the horizon: opening our Gold Mine student store, fall sports games, Back to School Night, the Halloween Dance. We are building on our momentum from last year and having even more fun this year!

Next week in advisory we introduce clubs. Is your student interested in something? Would they want to start a club? It’s a great way to meet new people and helps connect students to school in a different way.

If your student is riding their bike to school, please ensure they’re wearing a helmet, respecting the rules of the road, and walking their bike on campus. We’re seeing some outstanding bike behavior as well as some dangerous bike behavior. Please help us keep our kids safe!

Have an awesome, sunny weekend before we snuggle into some cozy fall weather next week!

Upcoming Dress Code Lesson for Students

Now that school is in full swing, we want to take a moment to review and reflect on our district Dress Code.  These early conversations will help us be proactive and transparent in understanding school expectations and values, and will set everyone up for success, respect, and safety.

Next week your student will participate in reviewing a lesson on the Dress Code. This is the same dress code that we had last year. We encourage families to be part of this conversation alongside us!  Feel free to review the Dress Code policy here

It is important that our whole learning community shares a common understanding and interpretation of the Dress Code in order to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment. Proactive conversation helps avoid misunderstandings, surprises, or unintended harm later. Thank you for your partnership!

Technology Resources for Parents

Our BLP District website contains a wealth of information and resources for families.
