Next week at PCMS, we will all be celebrating our Classified Staff. These individuals go above and beyond to make sure that our spaces are clean and safe, meals are hot and nutritious, learning is supported and encouraged, and our day-to-day operations happen without a hitch! We have such a special group of people that are able to spend time with our Golden Eagles each day and it is the honest truth that the work of a school CANNOT be done without them. A million ‘thank yous’ to our incredible staff!

Grade Reminder: Remember, if you see work within your student’s Canvas page that is marked 50%, that DOES NOT MEAN that they have completed this assignment in any meaningful way. With the change in our MS and HS grading systems, a 50% (or No Grade – NG) is the lowest grade that a student will receive. Now would be a great time to go over this with your student as well as take time to look at your student’s Canvas report to monitor progress. HERE is a link to the grading policy and HERE is a helpful guide to get set up as a Canvas Observer.

Additionally, it is very important that students complete all Asynchronous work during their Asynchronous Days. The work that is assigned during this time is mandatory and will receive a grade just as any other assignment. These days are also good times for students to engage in personal reading and mathematics using the supports that have been designed by classroom teachers. There is always room for more if these days feel light. Please reach out directly to classroom teachers to get the best information as to what additional work can look like during these days.

Now that we are in Semester II, we can use data from Semester I to identify students who experienced a high degree of struggle. During next week, we will be reaching out to families to create schedules for students who may need scheduled supports on Asynchronous Days. This will include a letter home, permission slip, and a connection point for the family moving forward. Because we want to create a different trajectory for these students during second semester, we are excited about launching these supports. Please know that if you are contacted, we are simply interested in providing more support for the future.

Conference Update: In mid-April, we will have conferences. These likely will be virtual but this remains to be seen. Prior to signing up for conference times, students will be bringing home a Take Home Conference to complete with families by April 7th. After the Take-Home Conference is completed, families will be able to determine if they would like to meet with teachers or not. Some families may be directly contacted prior to April 7th to attend an Invite Only conference as well. I will share more information regarding conferences in subsequent News from the Nest issues.

Youth Truth Survey: Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in our school survey earlier this year! We just received the data from our survey and what stands out more than anything is that our students are feeling really connected to our school and love their teachers! It is no surprise for any of us that the vast majority are also really excited to be learning in school rather than alone at home. It is a really nice reminder what a special place Pacific Crest is for our young people. I will share more information in future News issues. Stay tuned!

Purchasing Photo Packets Online: You have the ability to order pictures up to four (4) days after picture day online by visiting dorianstudio.com and searching for your school’s name. After the 4-day grace period expires, a personalized access key will be sent home with picture delivery. A $7 shipping and handling fee will be added to all orders made with a personalized access key and orders will ship directly to your home. Questions…contact Dorian Studios at (800) 826-3535 or www.dorianstudio.com/support. Please note: We will not be having a photo retake day this year.

Final Reminder | Yearbook Purchasing: Don’t wait! We are up against our ordering deadline to our yearbook publisher. We will NOT be placing a reorder for books this spring when books are distributed. So go to https://touchbase.bend.k12.or.us/ to order now! Yearbooks at $20.00.

Family Fun Trivia Night is now FREE! As a community building event, we want to invite all households to join in the fun on Wednesday, March 10 at 6:oo PM. Simply go to the following Webex Room: https://bls.webex.com/meet/liza.huet. Click here for flyer.

For families who would still like to support Family Access Network (FAN), we are collecting NEW pairs of winter gloves and socks. Look for the collection container at the main entrance of the school beginning Monday, March 1.

Athletics Information: Track started this week and it was an awesome turn out! Thank you athletes and families for helping our systems run so smoothly! Please note that we will NOT have spectators at events this year. THIS LETTER outlines the guidelines for HS Athletics and middle school will be similar; however, at the MS level, we will not have live-streamed events at this time.

We are excited to welcome Troy O’Bryan and Ron Lund to our football coaching staff. We continue to look for a Volleyball coach as well as an assistant Cross Country coach. If you or someone you know is interested, please encourage them to apply using the BLP link found HERE.

A Group for Learning: Race, Equity, History, and Raising Great Humans– We have had an ongoing book club at PCMS focused on Equity for the past year. During the next two months, we will be changing the structure and using podcasts, essays, articles, and other information to explore some of Oregon’s history as it relates to the above topics. Join us for one or all of the sessions during March and April (3/4, 3/18, 4/1, 4/15, 4,29). We will meet every other Thursday from 6-7 pm in Lisa’s Webex room and discuss one focused article each time. If you are interested, please sign up to receive information using THIS LINK. Everyone is welcome so don’t hesitate to share this with others. The first reading/video will be sent on Monday (3/1). Come ready to think and learn together!

Go Golden Eagles!

Happy Monday Golden Eagles and families!

This week, we will be going to 4 new classes (Periods 4- 7). If you are feeling like you are unsure of where to go, please remember that as long as you know your teacher’s name, we can get you to the right place! Lots of teachers will be around in the halls just waiting to help you! This also means that you will need to re-examine lunch. During these weeks, lunch will be connected to Period 5. As you order lunch, you can find that teacher’s name on the form and it will be delivered to the hall like it was last week. If you have any questions, please ask!

New Staff: We are so excited to welcome new staff members to our team!

  • Jake Miles will be teaching 8th grade math for the remainder of the year. He is so excited to meet all of the students and begin to get in the groove of classroom practices with everyone.
  • Renee McCoy will be our new Registrar and will begin on March 1st. Renee has been in the district for some time and some of you may remember her from her time at High Lakes several years ago.
  • Sara Compton will be supporting students all around the school, in the music classrooms, and will begin meeting with students in small groups on asynchronous days in the near future.
  • Anja DuBois will also be supporting students in the music room, in the hallways and at lunch, as well as supporting in small groups on asynchronous days.
  • Julia Reynolds will be teaching 4th period French. Although students may see her as an art teacher during the day as well, she is excited to get students excited about language.
  • Heather Wolford will be teaching our Algebra class for the remainder of the year. Beginning in March, Jake Miles will also join the classroom and together they will be doing some team-teaching as well.
  • Brian Broaddus will be coaching 8th grade football. He has been a coach in our district for some time and is looking forward to becoming an Eagle!
  • Ashley Wallace will now be an assistant track coach for our season that begins today!
  • Jane Ward has just accepted the position of head cross country coach in addition to being the head track coach at PCMS

Still Looking: We are still looking for a head Volleyball coach and we will have an assistant cross country coach position posted very soon. If you know of someone, we’d love to have them join our team!

Area Change Request (ACR) Process: If you are currently on an ACR or are interested in one for the next year, please visit this webpage and submit your forms by March 1st this year. The district is asking that everyone re-submit them this year as our boundaries are changing.

Dress for the Weather: Remember, during lunch, all students will be outside for a portion of the day. Central Oregon weather is famous for changing throughout the day so be prepared by bringing a warm jacket for your time outside!

Observer Accounts: If you want to be the most up-to-date on grades and information that your student sees from teachers, please use this tool to set up your observer account in Canvas. Progress and grades should never be a surprise. Make it a habit of checking this weekly and talking with your student about their progress continually. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact teachers directly.

Asynchronous Days: As you may have started to recognize during the past two weeks, asynchronous days require far more independence than our previous CDL days. This means that you should talk with your student about a schedule for the day. Teachers are putting out information to students via Canvas that must be completed as if they were in person in class. Last week during asynchronous days, several students did not go into Canvas and likely did not complete assignments. Students are responsible for completing all assignments during asynchronous days. They will be graded and also discussed within the classroom.

The information that teachers are sharing and expecting on these days may be easy for some and more difficult for others. If you find that your child is needing more during these days, please reach out directly to the classroom teacher. Ideas for challenge differ based on content, unit, and project so the teacher will have the best ideas related to ways to challenge them along the way.

Picture Days are Coming Up! Use the link below in the calendar to order photos.

Incoming 6th Graders (Current 5th Graders): On Tuesday, 2/23 at 5:30 pm, I will be hosting a virtual informational night for all 5th Grade families who wish to learn more about PCMS. All 5th grade families should have recently received an email from current elementary schools. A Q&A session will take place in my Webex Room at 5:30pm. Feel free to spread the word if you know of a family who has an incoming 6th grader. https://bls.webex.com/meet/lisa.birk

Good morning Golden Eagles and families!

We are looking forward to beginning Week 2 with all of you back in the building. Thank you all for working hard to continue to practice all of the COVID protocols that we have in place. As we move into our second week together, take extra care to think about social distancing when you are moving between classes. This seems to be the area of most difficulty at this time for students. Social Distancing means that walking with friends is different than it was in the past. Remember, we are only able to stay in school when we are all being vigilant about our safety practices. It takes all of us and while we will continue to get better each day you all did an excellent job during Week One. Thank you for your hard work!

Inclement Weather and Moving in and out of Hybrid Instruction: This document outlines the expectations for students in District CDLCDL related to quarantine, Hybrid, and All In models.  It is also important to remember that schools might be in one or more model(s) at a time or they may move in and out of a model. For example, most of a school could be in Hybrid but one class could be participating in CDL because of quarantine. Weather Expectations

Additionally, for the next few months, we can depend on Central Oregon sending us a variety of weather conditions. It remains important that students dress for the weather as they will be outside for a portion of each day during lunch.

Area Change Request (ACR) Deadlines: These are quickly approaching and there is now an electronic form that parents can use for ACRs. Families can find this information HERE. This year all families will need to complete a new form as boundaries for the new HS will be in effect. ALL FORMS ARE DUE TO HOME SCHOOLS BY MARCH 1st

February 5, 2021

This has been an absolute awesome week! Thank you all for reading information along the way, watching loooooong videos regarding safety, and helping your students be prepared for this new entry into school. It was so heart-warming to see all of our Golden Eagles!

This week there is less in this update but please feel free to scroll to the one from last week or the week before to get any other questions answered that you might have. Here is some new information for the week:

  • School safety updates:
    • Please talk with your child about social distancing and maintaining 6 feet from their friends while at school. This has proven to be the most difficult piece to get used to as we work with students this week.
    • Masks must fit snugly over the nose and mouth. We have some that students can use but often they do not fit smaller student faces well. Please invest in several masks that will be the best fit for your child. As a reminder- bandanas, buffs, gaiters, or masks with valves are never allowed.
    • This weekend is the Super Bowl. Please be thoughtful as you are planning your day. The only way our schools can stay open is when our public practices all of the measures that are in our schools each day: social distancing, mask wearing, and reducing gathering as much as possible.
  • Schedule Alterations: You should have received a message from Superintendent Nordquist some time today. Due to the number of adults getting vaccinated at the end of next week, Friday will be a day of live Webex for students in cohorts L-Z rather than a day at school. Please follow the Wednesday schedule for classes.
  • Openings at PCMS! We have several openings at PCMS currently. We are looking for a track coach, a football coach, and educational assistant, and a math teacher. If you or someone you know is interested, please send them to the jobs link at BLP Schools.
  • New Golden Eagle Team Members!
    • Margaret Grubb is joining our awesome team at PCMS as a new French teacher for French 1 & 2. Margaret currently teaches languages at Mt. View High School.
    • Anja Du Bois has joined our team as a new Educational Assistant supporting student success. She comes to us from a college teaching level and is so excited to work with our Eagles!
    • Aaron Toso is a father of a PCMS Golden Eagle and is now our new Wrestling coach. He comes with lots of wrestling background from coaching in large programs in Washington.
  • Track Virtual Q & A for Students and Families: Coach Ward will be holding a virtual Q & A session on Tuesday, Feb. 9th at 8:30 am. This is for all PCMS students and families interested in participating in the upcoming track season. Session will be held in Coach Ward’s Webex room at bls.webex.com/meet.jane.ward
  • French, Choir & 8th grade Math Update:
    • Ms. Grubb will be teaching French 1 & 2. Mrs. Durfee will be teaching Period 1 French in the 6th grade wheel next week. We continue to look for someone to teach French during Period 4 on Eagle Weeks. If you have any leads, please send Lisa an e-mail.
    • Choir students at PCMS will have choir webex from 9:10-9:40 on Wednesdays in lieu of the time that is listed for their class period. This allows for Ms. Jacot to meet with them even while she is working with students at the high school.
    • 8th Grade Math students in Mrs. Dziurzynski’s class will have a substitute through Tuesday, February 16. We hope to have this position filled by then. Algebra students who were in Mrs. D’s 5th period class will now have Heather Wolford as their Algebra teacher. They will meet in Mrs. Wolford’s class rather than upstairs.
  • African American History Month: This is not the only time that we want to celebrate the contributions, creativity, cultures, and craft of the Black community but one way you might find to celebrate this month is through the joy of reading. This link has several options to engage in new authors, creators, or ideas with which you may not yet be familiar. It also highlights a very popular Young Adult author Jason Reynolds on February 25th. Reynolds (along with Ibram Kendi) is the author of our summer student reading club book titled Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You.

Thank you all for your hard work to get our students, staff, and community prepared for the transition to Hybrid Learning. It was wonderful to see everyone’s faces again and we look forward to 18 weeks ahead. Be well, social distance, and wear a mask! Have a great weekend.

Go Golden Eagles! -L

We are so excited to see everyone in person this week! Please read below to be the most prepared for our transition. Remember, although there is no such thing as a zero risk activity, we have the best likelihood for success and keeping our schools safely open when everyone knows the protocols and follows them consistently. Staying up-to-date on information from PCMS each week by reading the News from the Nest will help as we make our way back into our building together. Thanks for reading!

Go Golden Eagles!

Orientation Week Begins!: We can’t wait to see you! This week we will see 6th graders A-K on Monday, 6th graders L-Z on Tuesday, 7th and 8th graders L-Z on Wednesday, and 7th and 8th graders A-K on Thursday. Bus routes will pick up on the regular schedule and the day will end at 1 pm. If you are a bus rider on Wednesday, the bus will take you home from PCMS a bit later at 2 pm.

We will NOT be eating lunch at PCMS during Orientation days as they are so short; however, students can order a lunch and bring it home that day if they would like. All food from Nutrition Services is free this year. If you child has an allergy and needs a different option, they must bring a doctor’s note that we will keep on file.

Students should plan to wear their mask to school and bring their backpack with charged iPad and something to write with to Orientation. Charging is extra important this year as we will be less able to share chargers, etc. with students. Additionally, students should plan to wear warm clothing because the classroom windows will remain open. They can also bring a reusable water bottle (preferably with a built in straw) to use throughout the day. Having a straw minimizes the amount of mask movement that will occur as they hydrate. Once Hybrid Instruction begins on Feb. 8, students should plan to bring earbuds as well as a notebook/paper to school as well.

Cellphones will remain OFF and AWAY during the day IN BACKPACKS this year. Cellphone use during the day will not be permitted. If you have an urgent message, please contact the front office. If you plan to pick up your child at a time other than typical release time, please arrange this ahead of time with our Attendance Office. We will have less ability to go into classes throughout the day to get students and we can have them ready if we are prepared. Families are also discouraged from bringing items to the office to be dropped off. Any transfer of materials requires sanitization and another disruption to the classroom. If students forgot something, we will simply try again another day.

Doors to the school will open at 10:35 each day to students. Skateboards, scooters, and bikes will all need to be locked up outside this year. Yes, they make locks for skateboards ;). Students will enter through the Right Doors if they ride the bus and the Central Doors if they are being dropped off to maximize social distancing. Remember parents: please pull forward👍. Students will go directly to Advisory where their teacher will greet them for the day. Students will be trained on protocols and then take a tour to Periods 1-3 during Orientation. Don’t worry. Many staff members will be around to direct you to your classroom- simply know your Advisory teacher’s name and we will help you on your way.

Recorded Student & Family Hybrid Instruction Webex with Principal: If you were unable to make it to one of the eight webex meetings last week, you can access a recording of one HERE. This recording is 54 minutes long. In it you will find answers to what hybrid instruction will look like at PCMS and all the things that you should consider as we transition.

PCMS Campus Map (Updated 2/2021): We made a few changes to our campus map. Here is the updated version as of 2/8/2021.

Mask Guidelines: All individuals on PCMS property MUST wear a mask. Masking guidelines have changed and we will no longer be allowing gaiters, buffs and bandanas as substitutes for cloth/disposable masks that fit snugly around the mouth and nose. Buffs/gaiters placed OVER a mask that adheres to our requirements are permissible.  Masks with valves or otherwise vent air are never acceptable.  Mask Do’s pdf poster

What Lunch Do I Have? Students can use THIS LIST to determine which lunch they will have during which week. All lunches will happen in the 1st period classroom (Golden Week) or the 5th period classroom (Eagle Week). If a student has 1st lunch, they will arrive at 1st/5th period at 12:05. They will eat until 12:20 when they will transition to outside. At 12:40 they will transition back to the classroom and begin 1st/5th period lesson at 12:45. If a student has 2nd lunch, they will arrive at 1st/5th period at 12:05. They will begin the lesson. At 1:15 students begin lunch. At 1:30, they will transition outside until 1:45 when they come back to the classroom to pick up their materials and transition to Period 2/6. Period 2/6 begins at 1:55.

Positive Case Contact Information: Please see the attached letters regarding what you might expect when or if there is a positive case of COVID at PCMS. As a reminder, HIPPA regulations require confidentiality in regard to sharing individual names and other information with anyone other than health officials.

Welcome Back to School Video: We are requiring all families review an informational video for all Bend-La Pine Schools about health and safety related procedures that will need to be followed when students return to in-person learning. Targeted toward middle school and high school students.

Staff Changes, etc.: Mrs. Dziurzynski and Mrs. Charnay will not be at PCMS for the remainder of the school year. This means that students with these teachers will have a substitute for a time until a more long-term replacement is in place. Mrs. Jacot’s 1st period class will have a substitute (Mr. Seed- you know him already:) for the 1st 12 weeks due to High School schedules overlapping with the middle school. Mr. Rushton and Mrs. Seed will continue to teach our Band and Orchestra students but they will be screen-casting into the classroom at PCMS while they are physically at Cascade. Students at PCMS will have an instructor in the classroom but the teacher of record will remain the experts (Rushton/Seed).

Staff Openings: We are looking for some great people to join our team! Right now there are openings for a Counseling Secretary/Registrar, Football Assistant Coach, and an Instructional Educational Assistant. It is likely that this week we will have another posting for a Track Coach as well. If you are interested, we’d love to have you (or someone you know) apply. Jobs for PCMS can be found on the District Webpage

Student/Staff School Photos Days & Yearbook Purchase: Mark your calendar! Dorian Studios, our new vendor, has confirmed Thursday, Feb. 25 and Friday, Feb. 26 as days to capture photos of our students (and staff). Detailed information will be coming soon.

Golden Eagle Athletics Registration & Schedules for 2020-21: GOOD NEWS! Registration for 6th-8th Grade Track season opens on Monday, February 1st.  Track season begins February 22 and ends April 2. Go to the PCMS Athletics webpage for the most up-to-date information registration information.

As we move closer to coming back to the building, the next two weeks will be filled with planning by teachers while students wrap up projects, assignments, and tasks from first semester. Students continue to have assignments within Canvas all next week and teachers will be giving feedback periodically along the way. On February 5th, teachers will be working on report cards. DO NOT WAIT to get assignments completed. Please submit any outstanding assignments by Friday 1/29 if possible and e-mail your teacher to make sure that they know that your assignment was submitted.

I know that everyone has a multitude of questions and wonderings related to our HYBRID transition. Please mark your calendars to attend one of several informational sessions that I will be giving next week. See below for more information. Thank you in advance for your attention to the information in the notifications below (and in past News from the Nest posts). When or if you need support along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Go Golden Eagles!

Welcome Back to School Video

We are requiring all families review an informational video for all Bend-La Pine Schools about health and safety related procedures that will need to be followed when students return to in-person learning. Targeted toward middle school and high school students.

Students Moving to Bend La-Pine Online Program Second Semester

All students participating in the Bend-La Pine Online Program for semester 2 of the 2020-21 school year will need to request enrollment through Bend-La Pine Online.  The survey you filled out demonstrated your interest for our planning purposes; however it DID NOT complete or begin your registration. Please use the links above to complete this. If you have trouble, you can contact Carey Kraybill at [email protected]

Important iPad Information

During this time at home, some of you have opted to use computers other than your school iPad.  If you have any iPad issues that prevent you from using your school iPad, please contact Marni Hanna ASAP and we can resolve the issues this week, while you do not have WebEx’s with your teachers. If you have any cracks in the glass at all, the iPad needs to be replaced.  Marni Hanna 541-355-7834 or [email protected].  We can also troubleshoot issues via webex: https://bls.webex.com/meet/marni.hanna

How can we get our family ready for the change to school? What does a Golden Eagle need to know?

    • FAMILY/STUDENT INFORMATION SESSIONS NEST WEEK: Please plan on coming to ONE information session next week. It is our hope that all Golden Eagles and families attend. During this time, we will share all the information you might need to know as you come back to school. This is not a forum for discussing your pleasure or displeasure with the move to hybrid but to hear information and clarify common questions. All sessions will be in my webex room: https://bls.webex.com/meet/lisa.birk
      • Monday 1/25 @ 5 pm
      • Tuesday 1/26 @ 5 pm
      • Wednesday 1/27 @ 9 am
      • Wednesday 1/27 @ 11 am
      • Wednesday 1/27 @ 2 pm
      • Thursday 1/28 @ 9 am
      • Thursday 1/28 @ 5 pm
      • Friday 1/29 @ 9 am
    • Morning Drop Off: If you plan to drop your child off during the week, please remember that students can come into the building beginning at 10:35. Class will begin at 10:50. Morning drop-off can be a stressful time so please plan ahead. At PCMS like many schools, there is a single entry and exit for cars during this time. HERE is a map to help. Please drive carefully, pull as far forward as possible before dropping off, and smile:) We will get through this together.
    • Practice: Practice hand washing, discuss what it means to be 6 feet apart from others, and practice wearing masks and how to take them on and off properly. All individuals within a school building must wear masks at all times and we just learned that BUFFS, BANDANAS, or GAITERS ARE NOT ALLOWED. Help your student understand the reasons that masks support the safety and welfare of them and others around them.
    • Weekly Schedule: Know the schedule and make a plan for asynchronous days. In the hybrid model, students will be at home for three days each week. For two of these days, students will not be participating in webex and will be expected to complete assignments and learning completely independently. Set students up for success with the use of proper work areas as well as materials like timers in order to keep them on track.
    • Daily Schedule: Students may be eager to plan their route between classes before coming to school. They can do this by going into Student View and choosing their Quarter 3 schedule. Once they see their classes, they can locate the room number and teacher name and use the MAP to make a plan.
    • Mitigate: As a family, please mitigate any opportunity for the virus to be spread or brought into the school by minimizing group sizes and wearing masks while in the community. If you leave the state for travel, it is advised that students and family members quarantine for 10 days as a precaution.
    • Prepare for disruption: As the OHA says, there is no such thing as a zero risk activity. We will be operating with the utmost adherence to safety guidelines but it is a very real possibility that your student could be affected by the virus or someone who has had contact with them. In these events, students will need to leave the building and we will not have areas that will be supervised or will be safe for students to wait for extended periods of time. Have a plan in place for who will be picking up your child in the event that they need to return home with limited notice.
    • Communicate: Much of the planning within our school has to do with numbers of students in any given class and space at any given time. If you are considering making a change with your school delivery, please let our counselors know as soon as possible

Good evening Golden Eagles and families!

During this week, a number of decisions in our district were shared with our public. On Tuesday, our board announced our new Superintendent Dr. Steve Cook. You can read more about him here. He will begin working in Bend La Pine on July 1; however, will likely be part of many of the conversations and upcoming plans our district makes during the next few months. The role of a superintendent is pivotal in any community. As you know, Pacific Crest is grounded in Identity, Relationships, and Community. We look forward to having Dr. Cook work with our Golden Eagles as we strengthen our community bonds in the years to come.

Additionally, we continue to ask that our parent community takes a few moments to answer questions related to the school experience we deliver at PCMS. This listening endeavor was one that was planned well-before COVID entered into the picture and it remains a commitment from our district that we periodically solicit and reflect on the voices of those we serve. Please take a few moments to complete THE SURVEY, which is only available until January 22, regarding your experience at PCMS. All schools are hoping to have their complete parent population participate if possible. Try to give answers as they relate to a typical year if possible. If that is unknown to you at PCMS, feel free to share your experience as you know it this year.

Finally, and obviously most importantly, the plan for Hybrid Instruction was shared and discussed. Due to recent grant dollars and a public interest in a continued option for CDL, our district now has 3 options available to students. They are described below in the survey in which we are asking for each family’s response. Options include HYBRID: B (2 days a week in person, 2 days independent, 1 day in Webex), CONNECTED: C (Bend- La Pine Online- independent digital program designed for flexible scheduling and highly independent), and DISTRICT CDL: D (CDL at the district level- New teachers hired at the district level dependent upon the number of students indicating this option. Students are in live webex as they were in CDL formerly and will be in courses with students across the district.)

I know that even these three options do not meet the needs of the hopes and wishes of all Golden Eagle families. I have heard from families who would like us not to go into Hybrid at all, those that want to continue with CDL with their teachers, and those who are lamenting the loss of a favorite class that they may no longer have access to. Similarly, these options do not encompass the complete hopes and wishes of all teachers and school leaders either. Teachers will be now planning for two quite different groups (A and B cohort) and will be letting go of relationships with students that they have worked hard to build this year. Although it may seem that a CDL option could simply be added to their plates, the new CDL option has been added at the district level to ensure that our teachers can plan for and focus on the two new groups before them, while another group of teachers can plan for those that will not be coming into the building. I know that in some cases, this changes course plans. This pandemic has caused us to all make what can feel like impossible decisions. As we move forward, I encourage you to make the best decision possible for your child and understand that it likely will not be perfect. I will do my best to keep you and yours informed of your options as we progress together into second semester. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. If you have further questions, please contact me.

Last week there were many pieces of important information regarding Area Change requests for next year, High School choices, yearbook information, and more. I encourage you to scroll down and continue to read last week’s message if you haven’t already.

I hope that on this celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, you and yours were able to spend time together. On this day I hope that you worked in service to one another, your neighbors, and/or learning about and strengthening the community around you. I am grateful to do this work with all of you and know that we are always stronger together. Go Golden Eagles!

Urgent – Response Needed!

“The Spotlight,” the district newsletter came out with a very important survey concerning your intentions for your child in coming back to school.  Bend-La Pine Schools is pleased to announce the launch of the new District Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) option – bringing the number of learning options for students and families to three for the 2020-21 school year:

  • All-in for grades K-3 or Balanced/Hybrid for grades 4-12
  • Connected for students in grades K-12
  • District CDL (New program), which pairs local students with local teachers for daily instruction, much like the current CDL model being used in classrooms today.

We need all families to complete this survey by Wednesday, January 20, which asks for identification of your student’s preferred learning model – A/B, C or D for the upcoming second semester. Additional information: New Learning Options.

We also need all families to let transportation know if they plan to have their child ride the bus to and from school by completing completing this survey. Apparently, depending on the browser you may be using, the options that pop-up in this transportation survey may be unusual. If that occurs, please consider Y to be Yes and N to be No.

There are TWO surveys above.  We need all families to fill out both.

Openings at PCMS!

Currently on the district jobs website, we have posted a 7th grade head football coach and an 8th grade head football coach. As our fantastic past coaches have students who are now older, we are excited to find new Golden Eagle Coaches to support our student athletes.

Additionally, we have a district opening for an Educational Assistant position and another one at our school is likely to post soon. If you or someone you know might be interested, please visit or encourage them to visit our district jobs site or contact me directly. These postings typically last 10 days.

Happy New Year Golden Eagles!

New Information Regarding the Move to Hybrid: Below you will find information related to scheduling, commonly asked questions, and preparation tools as we move toward hybrid learning.

  • PCMS HYBRID SCHEDULE
  • No Webex Classes January 25 – February 4
  • Orientation Week February 1-February 4: Students will come to school with a fraction of the students to walk through classes and learn and practice protocols. Schedule Below.
    • Monday- 6th graders in cohort A-K. Arrival 10:35 & dismissal 1:00 pm
    • Tuesday-6th graders in cohort L-Z. Arrival 10:35 & dismissal 1:00 pm
    • Wednesday- 7th and 8th graders in cohort L-Z. Arrival 10:35 & dismissal with parent pick-up 1:00. Bus riders will stay until bus pick up at 2:00 pm.
    • Thursday- 7th and 8th graders in cohort A-K. Arrival 10:35 & dismissal 1:00 pm
  • What if my child needs to change cohorts? These requests MUST be made to our counselors by January 15th. These will be granted based on need and space allocation with preference given to students in different cohorts who are living within the same household.
  • What if I want to stay in CDL? At this time, students must choose between coming to school in person or going to Bend La Pine Online. Schools and teachers do not have a realistic way to manage three groups (those at home on asynchronous days, those at school, and those who never come to the building). Stay tuned for this week’s board meeting when options will likely be discussed.
  • How can we get our family ready for the change to school?
    • Practice: Practice hand washing, discuss what it means to be 6 feet apart from others, and practice wearing masks and how to take them on and off properly. All individuals within a school building must wear masks at all times. Help your student understand the reasons that masks support the safety and welfare of them and others around them.
    • Schedule: Know the schedule and make a plan for asynchronous days. As you can see above, in the hybrid model students will be at home for three days each week. For two of these days, students will not be participating in webex and will be expected to complete assignments and learning completely independently. Set students up for success with the use of proper work areas as well as materials like timers in order to keep them on track.
    • Mitigate: As a family, please mitigate any opportunity for the virus to be spread or brought into the school by minimizing group sizes and wearing masks while in the community.
If you are considering making a change with your school delivery, please let our counselors know as soon as possible. Additionally, I have been asked by several people how they can communicate their beliefs about hybrid learning (both in support and otherwise). Please direct any feedback to our school board by visiting our district website if you choose.

Youth Truth Survey: At the beginning of the year, our district partnered with Youth Truth– a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the county – to conduct an anonymous survey on our behalf. This is the time that was determined early on for gathering information from our students and families regarding their experiences. So, although this is an unusual time and we are navigating the waters of potential hybrid learning, we are interested in your feedback regarding the experience that we provide for your student and family at PCMS typically (not regarding CDL, hybrid, or otherwise). Families- Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on January 22 by clicking this link: ytsurvey.org/bendfamily21. I will continue to send reminders via social media throughout this week as well. Please note:

  • The survey needs to be completed in one sitting.
  • We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
  • If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you may respond to the survey multiple times – one time per child.
  • If you write any comments, please do not include your name or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership.

New Middle & High School Attendance Boundaries for 2021-22 School Year

New middle school and high school attendance boundaries for the 2021-22 school year will take effect in September . Students may attend a neighborhood middle school or high school outside of their new attendance area with an approved Attendance Area Change Request (ACR). Families must submit an Area Change Request (ACR) to their 2021-22 home school for approval by March 1st.

Students who will be 8th graders in the fall of 2021 and who are affected by the boundary changes will be guaranteed a spot at their current school if they wish, as long as they submit an Area Change Request (ACR) by March 1st. All other students may complete an ACR, and these may be approved, depending on space available in schools, grade-level size, etc.

High School Enrollment Choice Options

The 2020-2021 school year lottery period for Realms High School, Skyline High School and Bend Tech Academy at Marshall is now OPEN. The High School Choice Options application period is from Monday, January 4 to Friday, March 19 @ 3:00pm. Applications through the Interest List received after March 19 will be filled on a first come, first served basis should any spots remain.

Students may attend a neighborhood high school outside of their attendance area with an approved Attendance Area Change Request (ACR). Families must submit an ACR to their home school for approval by March 1, 2021.

Athletics Update

With COVID-19 presenting many challenges the Bend La Pine Schools remain committed to providing access and opportunity for all student athletes in middle school sports. While our middle schools continue in distance learning we have been discussing changes to the athletic calendars moving forward in the 2020-21 academic year.

The Oregon State Athletic Association (OSAA) has adjusted all seasons into shortened time frames at various times of the year for our regular middle school athletic seasons. We understand there will be challenges along the way and with moving the seasons we are hoping to provide access for our students to their desired programs. Please visit the PCMS Athletics page on our website for detailed information regarding updated season dates and registration for each sport.

Bus Transportation Registration & Covid Safety Protocols

As we begin our hybrid schedule, families who will be utilizing BLS bus transportation for the remainder of the school year must register student(s) by going to BLS School Bus Webpage. There is also a very important informational video on COVID safety protocols for students who will be riding the bus. It is critical for each bus rider and family to watch the video and understand these protocols.

Free Covid-19 Testing Clinic (Pruebas de Covid-19 gratuitas)

Free clinic at Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center on Wednesday, January 13. Click the below flyers for details.

District/School Alerts and Updates

Many of you may know this, but we would like to remind our community that the district has a very informative webpage and a text messaging system — BL Connect — to alert parents in the case of an emergency such as: weather events that close or delay schools, fire evacuation, and school lockdown.

Happy Friday Golden Eagles!

This break is something that I think we all are looking forward to. I hope that you and your family will have time to be together, be in nature, be calm, and stay safe. I can say on behalf of our entire PCMS staff, we thank you for your hard work during this time and the support you continue to give to our Golden Eagle community even as we are apart. Wishing you all much love and peace during this holiday season and always. Have a wonderful break!

Go Golden Eagles! – Ms. Birk

Missing Assignment Information: I know that many of you may want to use the next two weeks to tie up loose ends and finish old assignments in order to start 2021 fresh and position yourself in the best way possible to complete Semester I. It is SO important to know that as you complete assignments that are listed as MISSING, you must contact your teacher to let them know when you submit an assignment for grading. Our system does not automatically notify teachers that assignments have been submitted or re-submitted so in order to change your grade, they must hear from you. Please don’t let your hard work go unnoticed! Notify your teacher so they can make the changes necessary!

Nurses Newsletter #4: This nurse newsletter focuses on mental health with a reminder about immunizations at the end.

The Winter Equity Book Club: Our Equity Book Club at PCMS has been such a wonderful addition to our school community and culture. Throughout the summer, students and parents read a historical book called Stamped, by Ibram Kendi. At the end of our summer session, we discussed new books to read in the future and the book described below was brought forward as one that folks (those raising white students as well as students of color) were interested in exploring. Please join me for a 4 session, bi-weekly book club beginning on January 7th. We will meet every other Thursday evening (6:00-7PM) via Webex to converse and process, in community, Jennifer Harvey’s book Raising White Kids. This book deals with the conundrums that parents may experience when discussing race and equity with white children, particularly in a predominately white community. It is also timely as our young people continue to process the multitude of events this year. Here is a bit more information: VIDEO. Pacific Crest friends, families, students, and additional community members are invited to participate. All meetings will take place in Lisa’s Webex Room. Contact Lisa if you have any questions and if you are interested in participating, please add your name and contact information HERE. Please come to our first session ready to discuss Chapters 1 & 2.

The Winter-Break Podcast Club: Dirk Matthias (principal of REALMS) has invited interested community to join in a Winter Podcast club. You do the listening assignment prior to the meeting and then, you come to a weekly Wednesday evening (6:00-7PM) WebEx Meeting to converse and process, in community, what you heard in that week’s assigned episode. The Podcast that we are going to be listening to is the second season of “Class of 2025” published by OPB. Here’s the trailer. New episodes drop weekly. The podcast is available on Apple PodcastsSpotify, the NPR One app and at opb.org. The club actually started last Wednesday with the first episode. In our next meeting on Wednesday, 12/23 we’ll be talking about Season 2, Episode 2: “When School and Home Collide: COVID-19 continued”. All meetings will take place in Dirk’s Webex Room. Realms friends, families, students, and additional community members are invited to participate. Contact Dirk if you have any questions.

Winter Break Out Box: Here is a Winter Julbilee Breakout Box for kids to do over the break if they’d like. There is one lock that was challenging, but there are hints on page 2 of the document.

Youth Truth: You should have received district communication regarding an upcoming survey our students will be asked to participate in in January. Our district has partnered with an outside organization in order to gain insight from families and students regarding their experiences at school. To view the questions students will be asked, you can click HERE. MS questions begin on page 10. If you would NOT like your child to participate, please e-mail me prior to January 8th.

Good evening Golden Eagles and families!

My hope with this new format is to have information more easily accessible to you as we move forward in the years to come. Each week, rather than sending an e-mail to students and families, I will share the newest edition of the blog “News from the Nest”. It is my hope that rather than sifting through your e-mail inbox, you can bookmark this site and access current information regarding our school at any time. In the weeks to come, we may add different pages that can be found to the right of the small ‘News from the Nest’ title as we recognize better uses for this tool. I hope you enjoy our new and improved “News from the Nest” at PCMS.

This week is a week full of fun as we roll into a two-week break. We look forward to seeing all of your creative PCMS spirit beginning bright and early tomorrow! Before you leave for break, it is also a good time to check grades with your teachers and make a plan for catching up on any missing work. When we return from break there will be just 4 short weeks until the semester ends so now is a good time to make sure you are up-to-date. If you have ANY questions at all regarding grades or how you can get support, please reach out to your teachers. WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

Have a great week! Go Golden Eagles! -Ms. Birk
