Monday, November 1st

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have had a nice start to the week on this wonderfully foggy and rainy day. Sorry for the late send on this newsletter. Tonight’s weather reminds me of ski team practice when I was in high school…we’d be doing “dry land” runs and such and it was anything but dry. The combination of fog and dark brings fond memories and makes me dream of running 10 miles after “school” like I did as a sophomore. Ha. Don’t laugh if I can’t walk tomorrow or Wednesday.

I am hoping to get out and visit our OSSM’s at high school sites this week! Thursday mid-morning to early afternoon is looking promising at this point. OSSM’s, please let me know if you have any concerns or need anything specific from me before I come to visit. As we enter our second quarter you are going to see the pace pick up a bit…encourage your students to use their days off well if they are behind in their coursework! I look forward to visiting with you all in my webex room this Wednesday morning.

Thank you to everyone who helped with our fall DIBELS screening for elementary students. We screened 98 elementary students (43%); 69% of the students in the enhanced models and 31% of the students working in the independent model. With this, we will be able to provide interventions and monitor the growth of students as we move through the year and for those that struggle, provide key information to parents about their reading. The next screening will occur in January.

And another thank you to everyone who helped with our picture day for online students last Thursday. We had about 50 students come in for photos. If you hear from families who want photos and missed this opportunity please take names and Kevin or I will see if they can participate in a retake session at one of our brick and mortar sites. Additionally, if a full-time online family who lives in the La Pine area is interested in having their child’s picture taking and would like a more convenient location, they can go to one of the following sites on a picture retake day and have their picture taken there:

  • La Pine Middle School: November 5th (morning)
  • La Pine Elementary School: November 19th (morning)
  • Rosland Elementary School: December 8th (morning)

Parents can go to the school’s main office and let them know they are there to have their child’s picture taken and the school will help them out from there.

And finally…we are getting some new furniture at North Star next Monday and/or Tuesday! Looking forward to some round tables for our common area, larger desks to replace the wood-topped ones we are borrowing from the school, and new file cabinets. Hyphen is going to stage everything in the common space, so we will work on trading things out and moving around when we are all together on Wednesday, November 10.

Things of note for this week:

  • Wednesday, November 3rd:
  • OSSM Meeting (Amy’s webex room) at 7:45
  • Elementary meeting at 9:30
  • Secondary meeting at 10:30
  • All-NSE Staff Meeting at 1:00
  • Thursday, November 4th:
  • Virtual Coffee Chat for Full Time Online Families, 8:30-9:30 AM in Kevin’s Webex room

Have a wonderful week and stay warm!
