Four Core Priorities for Trauma-Informed Distance Learning

https://www.kqed.org/mindshift/55679/four-core-priorities-for-trauma-informed-distance-learning

A great article from MindShift that discusses the importance of Predictability, Flexibility, Connection & Empowerment during distance learning. In addition, the article included these important and insightful reminders:

  • Use trauma as “a lens, not a label” to understand students.
  • Trauma is a response, not an event. Do not assume that any particular child definitely did or did not experience something as trauma.
  • Although the COVID-19 pandemic is creating widespread anxiety, not all kids are experiencing it as stressful. Resources and relationships play a role.
  • For some students, school closures may be an escape from the stress or trauma caused by racism, bullying, not seeing themselves in the curriculum, test anxiety and other issues.
  • Social and emotional learning can help students, but the systemic issues that create stress and trauma also need to be addressed.
  • Trauma is not destiny. Healing is possible.

SEL Resource Hub from Juniper Elementary

The amazing Cammy Vodak & Jackie Vance at Juniper Elementary School put together a wonderful site of SEL content for their school, and lucky for us, anyone can access it. We love that every resource is organized to connect with one another! Each week has a new theme that connects with the CASEL Standards, and all of the parent resources and articles, family activities, videos for students, and check-in ideas for teachers connect to that theme. Thank you for sharing this great resource at our PBIS meeting Cammy & Jackie!

Thermostat Award Winner: Amanda Detweiler, R.E. Jewell Elementary

This week we are celebrating Amanda Detweiler, 1st grade teacher at R.E. Jewell Elementary.

We know that only a regulated adult can regulate a child. We also know that it isn’t easy! Amanda shared the following wise words:

Learning to take care of myself continues to be an ongoing process.  After having my 3rd child I realized I had to figure out what makes me happy- outside of my family, friends, students, and life responsibilities.  I was too tired and overwhelmed to be myself.  So I took a few mindfulness classes online and began to go to yoga on a regular basis.  Having space to be myself as a participant instead of a wife or daughter or mother or teacher was addicting and energizing.  Since then I meditate regularly, go to yoga & dance classes once a week, and faithfully do a little yoga during afternoon recess.  Every week I know I will have time to do something that I love that connects me with myself.

We appreciate you Amanda and what you give to our community!
