High Desert Middle Embraces New Students

Check out how well High Desert Middle welcomes new students that show up throughout the year. Starting at a new school can be so daunting (especially middle school), and HDMS ensures new students feel connected and supported from the get-go. Thanks to Nole Kennedy, Dean of Students for leading this work!

  • New student’s schedule is emailed to all affect teachers, admin team, and appropriate counselor
  • On the new student’s first day, they are assigned a mentor-student who takes them to/from their classes, sits with them at lunch, etc for the first few days
  • The Dean keeps a list of new students’ start date and after a couple of weeks of them attending HDMS:
    • Call them individually down to my office for a welcome meeting which includes:
      • Hearing about their background
      • Asking about their experience so far at HDMS
      • Sharing expectations and information about HDMS
      • Asking if there is anything we can do to support their transition
    • Calling their families to welcome their student to HDMS
    • Giving them an HDMS sticker and some candy
