Monday AM Notes, January 6

Happy New Year!
I hope you’ve had an incredible break and that you’re full of excitement as we begin 2020! We have lots of great things to look forward in the coming year!

A few notes to get you going:
1) First, some really great news–Korey has agreed to return and teach art for the rest of the year! For those you who don’t know Korey she is the parent of two Amity graduates and taught art at Amity for several years. She’s great with the kids and knows her way around Amity. She also likes to do lots of clay work so the kiln will likely be in full use. She’ll start next week (1/16) so you won’t have art this Thursday and Friday. For your own records she’ll be out of town 2/27, 2/28 and 3/5 so there won’t be art those days. I know some of you were excited to pursue other ways to incorporate art into your classroom and I want to encourage you to continue to do so–if there are times you want to do your own art just let me and Korey know! There’s plenty of flexibility.

2) Reminder: Afternoon Choice Time coverage continues for the rest of the year–K-2 teachers on Monday and Tuesday, 3-5 teachers on Thursday and Friday. It’s important to get this in your weekly planning and communicate with each other to make sure there is coverage. Thanks to those of you who have been remembering to get out!

3) We honor Martin Luther King, Jr on January 20 (his birthday is on Jan 15) this year.  I am hoping that you will spend some time honoring MLK with your classes–I think it is really important to keep the memory of King alive and to share his message of love and courage each and every year.  If you are looking for ideas here are a few (of many!) links:

4) New Partnerships begin this week–please work with your partner to decide when you will regularly get together:
*Kinder and Grade 2
*Grades 1 and 4
*Grades 3 and 5

5) Self-portraits for the auction are due! Please drop them by the office.

6) Monthly EA meeting on Thursday, January 16th at 8:30.

7) Cafe Amity this week on Friday, Grade 2 hosts

8) NO Staff meeting this week. SIW time is Teacher Directed. I think this would be a good time to meet with your new partner teacher and do some planning–just one idea.

9) Printing/printer costs: Our printing costs are nearly doubled so far this year compared to last year. This kind of unexpected cost can really crush our budget and force us to cut out other priorities. We can easily reduce our costs by making sure to plan ahead and do as much printing as possible via the print shop. If you are not sure how to do this please work with Patti to get up to speed.

10) Patti is out today, Korey will be covering for her.

Upcoming:
January 10: Cafe Amity, Grade 2 hosts
January 14: Fire Drill, 10:45am
January 16: EA meeting, 8:30
January 20: NO SCHOOL, MLK day
January 24: Camp Amity!
January 31: NO SCHOOL, teacher work day

Here’s to a great week!

Monday AM Notes, December 16

Good Morning!
The week has arrived–5 days until vacation! It’s been a bit of wild few weeks since Thanksgiving and I’m hoping this week goes great for everyone! Make sure to have fun with your kiddos this week!

A little Christmas humor:
Q. What’s a sheep’s favorite Christmas song?
A. “Fleece Navidad”!

A few notes to get you going:
1) As I have done for the last few years during the holidays I have made a donation to the Deschutes Children’s Foundations on behalf of the Amity staff. Want to know more about the work the foundation does? https://www.deschuteschildrensfoundation.org

2) Monday: Antarctica slide show with David Marchi, Talus’ dad at 8:30am today.

3) Wednesday: Quinn and Griffin’s grandfather will be doing a little entertaining—singing and playing music—on Wednesday at 12:30.  He performed last year and the kids loved it and he’s offering to return.  I’m hoping everyone can join.

4) Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday at 7:15. Hosted by district administration. Come hungry!

5) Staff meeting on Tuesday at 3pm. Let’s meet in Sara’s room.

6) SIW this week is teacher directed. Please discuss with each other how you’d like to use the time.

7) Please continue to think about End of Year Celebrations. We’ve agreed we want to try something new this year and I think it’s important to keep the conversation open and continuous. I will be sending you a copy of the Amity manifesto in a separate email.

8) PE/Music and Art continue as usual this week.

9) Any Friday theme ideas? Wild hat day?

10) After the break we honor Martin Luther King, Jr on January 20 (his birthday is on Jan 15) this year.  I am hoping that you will spend some time honoring MLK with your classes–I think it is really important to keep the memory of King alive and to share his message of love and courage each and every year.  If you are looking for ideas here are a few (of many!) links:

Monday AM Notes, December 9

Good Morning!
What a great holiday party–great food, amazing company, hysterical gifts! Big thanks to Ray and Lorin for hosting! I think the laughter was just the boost I needed to propel me into the next two weeks.

A big Happy Birthday to Jim today! There will be treats to enjoy in the staff room.

A few notes to get you going:
1) EBISS this Wednesday. Tonya will be here to cover your classes.
8:30-9:00: Grade 5
9:00-9:30: Grade 4
10:00-10:30: Grade 2
10:30-11:00: Grade 3
12:00-12:30: Kinder (kids will have PE with Mindy)
12:30-1:00: Grade 1 (kids will have PE with Mindy)

2) Shelter in Place drill on Tuesday at 9:20. Shelter in Place is most used for potentially damaging weather (windows breaking) or could be used in the case of harmful chemicals in the air. For this drill pull down the shades and move the kids as far away from the windows as possible. We’ll hold this for 5 minutes. We’ll announce it over the intercom.

3) SIW this week will focus on developing an alternative to narratives. I’ve sent a separate email linking you to the Google Doc we started weeks ago sharing ideas–please have a look before Wednesday and add thoughts and ideas. You can also link here: End of Year Celebrations

4) I’m meeting with EAs on Thursday at 8:30am. We’ll meet for about 30 minutes. K and 1 teachers please plan not to have your EA during this time (Grade 2 will be in art).

5) In an effort to start Community Time at 8am, please be sure to clear out your room by 7:55am whether or not the bell has been rung. I think it is really important that we make every effort to start at 8am each morning–if we keep stating late parents will become accustomed to it.

6) We’ll have two more rounds of Partnerships between now and the end of the year and each teacher pair will decide when to meet regularly. Next up are the following and I believe we agreed to start this after the Winter Break:
Grade 1 and 4
Grade 5 and 3
Grade 2 and Kinder

7) I have an admin meeting at Lava Ridge this afternoon so will be leaving around 2:45. Call or text if you need me.

8) Anyone have a good idea for a theme for this Friday? Fun hat? Fun socks? Favorite color or just colorful day? Fancy Dress Up? Let’s lock in today and share it with the community.

Upcoming:

1) Just a reminder, self-portraits for the auction are due before Winter Break.

10:00-10:30: Grade 2

Monday AM Notes, November 18

Good Morning!
First, a BIG Happy Birthday to Jill this week (Wednesday)! We’re sliding in to the holiday time of year and I think we are all looking forward to Thanksgiving Break next week. This week is a great opportunity to discuss the importance of being thankful and giving kids that chance to share what they are thankful for in their lives.

A few notes to get us going:
1) Jake is adding hours starting this week–he’ll be here until 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Over the next few weeks we’ll work on how this time can best be spent.

2) Lockout Drill on Tuesday at 10:30. Lockout is when we lock all exterior doors and do not allow anyone is our out of the building. In your classrooms it’s business as usual. Patti and I will announce the beginning and end of the drill using the intercom. Please make sure you let your classes know about the drill.

3) We are in need of more teachers current on their First aid/CPR, and I think it’s best of everyone is up to date if possible. I will be taking the 4 hour course on Thursday, December 19 starting at 4:30pm. Hoping others will join. You can sign up in Performance Matters in the staff portal.

4) SIW this week is teacher directed. Please chat amongst yourselves and decide how what you’d like to focus on this week. Ideas to consider: Dyslexia follow up, Words Their Way discussion, Math discussion, Partnerships. This can be whole group or small group, it’s up to you!

5) Regular Tuesday PM Staff Meetings begin this week with our focus on kiddos needing support. 2:45-3:15 in Frans’ room.

6) At our December 11 SIW we will be re-visiting our discussion about Narratives, Portfolios, and end of year Conversations. I am re-sharing the link to the Google doc we started after our original discussion–please have a look and add some thoughts between now and Dec 11 :
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ared8RCHxqix6v61FZZKOszROU_l-MgtCqVM7D6cKUs/edit

7) Grade 5 is collecting non-perishables for the Bend Food Project all this week with the hope of filling up as many crates as possible. Please remind parents in you weekly communications. I’ll also include a note in my note to parents this week, but they tend to read all of your emails and only some of mine.

8) As we will all be away from school next week please be sure to shut down all electrical equipment in your room–projectors, speakers, lights, etc.

9) Plans are still in place to meet up with Stu on Friday. Time is still yet to be determined but I know Ray sent out an email trying to nail it down.

10) We’ve tentatively set the date for the Staff Holiday Party–December 7–and Ray has offered to host. Please let me know if this date is going to work for you as I want to be sure as many people as possible can attend. This is for ALL staff!

Monday AM Notes (Tues), November 11

Team,
I hope you are enjoying the long weekend, seems like good timing given how busy we have been! Another busy, but fun-filled week ahead!

Quick note about the front entrance to school–it will be closed for at least the rest of this week. Parents must enter through the back door (parking lot)–they can exit through the back door or the Georgia Street door. They are still required to sign in and the sign-in machines have been moved in to the office. Korey has been hired to sit by the back door for the week to let parents in and out during the school day. If you have any tasks needing to be done (that she can do from her post) please let her know–she’ll be wanting things to do!

A few notes to get you going:
1) We welcome our new PE teacher Erin today! She will join us for Community Time and then have her first day of teaching at Amity. Please give her a hearty Amity welcome!

2) Tuesday PE schedule is the same for Grades K-3. Ray and Jeff, please remember that your new PE/Music time is Tuesday from 10-11am.

3) Picnic style lunch will be every Tuesday from now on–there simply won’t be time to get tables down after PE. We’ll have a few tables up for kiddos that don’t want to eat on the ground. When Spring comes we’ll be able to have PE outside so this won’t be an issue.

4) Staff meeting time–I have still not heard from most of you about preferred day–Tuesday or Thursday at 2:45. We will start next week so if you have a preference please share it with me via email.

5) Please remember that we start with afternoon Choice Time coverage this week–K/1/2 on Mondays and Tuesdays, 3/4/5 on Thursdays and Fridays. Please chat with your team.

6) Clothing Exchange this week on the stage, Wednesday through Friday. Kids need to be with their parent to “shop”, and only before and after school.

7) Family BINGO Night this Thursday from 5-6:30pm. This is a brown bag dinner event (families bring their own food). We are also selling pre-ordered pizza via Friends of Amity website–orders must be in by Wednesday at 5pm.

8) Frans, Jeff, and Ray will be at a workshop on Thursday all day.

9) Stewardship in the hallway. Just a friendly reminder to work with your class to help keep the hallway clean, especially at the end of the day.

10) SIW at 1:30 this week, Sara’s room. I’d like to use this time to check in on some ongoing work we are doing.

Upcoming
November 13-15: Fall Clothing Exchange on the stage
November 14: Family BINGO Night, 5-6:30
November 25-29: Thanksgiving Break–yahoo!

Here’s to a great, short week ahead!
Andy

Monday AM Notes, November 4

Good Morning Team,
We’ve made it past Halloween and we’re in motion towards Thanksgiving! It’s a busy time of year, but it’s also a fun-filled–let’s embrace the fun!

A few notes to get you going:
1) Interviews for PE and EA tomorrow (Tues) from 2:45-3:45. I am hoping a few of you can participate. Thanks!

2) Borrowing or taking supplies from the studio? If so, it’s really important that you ask permission. Both Janelle and Julie are reporting supplies disappearing and not returning, often supplies they need and planned on using. I’m also checking in with Camp Fire, but they have previously been clearly instructed not to use any of our supplies. If you are in need of supplies, please work with Patti to secure them.

3) Per our conversation last week, I’d like to start booking a staff meeting time each week so we can dedicate time to talking about students needing extra TLC. We can do Tuesdays or Thursdays, 2:45-3:15. If you have issues with either day please let me know before a decision is made–by the end of the week. I look forward to this dedicated time!

4) SIW this week is district guided. Grades 3-5 will meet here and be involved in a webinar related to Dreambox (new on-line math program). The rest of you need to get on Performance Matters (portal) and sign up for a workshop.

5) Pastini Fundraiser Monday and Tuesday. We get to keep 50% of proceeds, including take-out. Parents have been informed several times but it would be great if you could include the info in any parent emails being sent home at the start of the week.

6) Cafe Amity this Friday! Grade 4 hosts.

7) I will be gone on Thursday and can be reached in emergency only. If there is an emergency please do not hesitate to contact me.

8) Sara and Amanda will be gone Thursday and Friday to attend the Dyslexia Conference in Portland.

9) Clothing Exchange on the stage November 13-15 (Wed-Fri). Community Time folks take note!

Upcoming:
November 4/5: Pastini Fundraiser
November 7: Picture Retakes
November 8: Cafe Amity
November 8: Veteran’s Day lunch–all Vets in the Amity Community (relatives included) are welcome to join for the free lunch.
November 8: Pie delivery
November 11: NO School, Veteran’s Day
November 13-15: Fall Clothing Exchange on the stage
November 14: Family BINGO Night, 5-6:30
November 25-29: Thanksgiving Break–yahoo!

Here’s to a great week ahead!
Andy

Monday AM Notes, October 28

Good Morning!
I hope the 3 day weekend was good to you! It’s Halloween Week so there will be lots of energy in the building, embrace it and have fun!

A Halloween joke to start the week: What kind of music do mummies listen to? Wrap.

A few notes to get you going:
1) Mask making this week! Please allow your students time to have some fun with this.

2) Trick or Treating at the Ed Center info:
*We’ll begin sending students starting at 1:15 on Thursday. We’ll send classes as they are ready, hoping to stagger the groups a little.
*When students return you are welcome to do activities related to the candy–swapping, counting, sorting, etc. Allow each student to keep or eat 2 or 3 of their favorite candies–all the rest will be donated to troops overseas. Each class will have a bucket to fill. I’ll come by and weigh each bucket to see how much we are donating.
*We can end the day with some free play time on the playground if time permits.

3) Movie on Friday starting at 8:30 in the gym for Grades K-3. Grade 4 will watch a different movie in their classroom and Grade 5 will be on a field trip. Art is still on for Friday for Grade 3 and 4.
*Here’s what I have for possible movies for K-3 based on Common Sense Media reviews, but I am open for other recommendations–not easy to find a G rated movie that doesn’t have violence, super scary scenes, etc: Homeward Bound, Pick of the Litter, Cars, Ponyo. Please chat amongst yourselves and let me know which you think is best so I can let parents know by Wednesday.

4) SLGG Meetings this week, short and sweet. I’ll have the paperwork, please come to my office.
*Tues, 11:45am: Ray
*Tues, 12:00pm: Lindsey
*Tues, 1:45pm: Jeff
*Tues, 2pm: Frans
*Tues, 2:45: Jill
*Thurs, 8:30am: Sara
*Thurs, 10am: Scott “Fancy Pants” Zarling
*Thurs, 11:45: Amanda

5) Field Trips this week:
*K/1/2 are off to D and D Ranch today from 9am-2pm
*Grade 5 is off to South Slough on Friday 9am-2pm

5) We have a few important changes to the calendar:
*Cafe Amity has been moved to Friday, Nov 8 (day after Halloween didn’t seem to be the best day)
*Clothing Exchange is now Nov 13-15
*Family BINGO Night is now November 14, 5-6:30pm. Brown Bag dinner event (families bring their own dinner, we will also sell pre-ordered pizza)

5) SIW this week. We’ll be talking discussing the Equity and Excellence survey (related to influx of big dollars coming from Student Success Act–$1 billion coming to schools, $11-13 million coming to BLP). We’ll start at 1:30 with a short training with Kim then transition into the discussion. We’ll be done by 3pm (I have to get Kaila to an appointment by 3:30!).

6) We’re starting to think ahead for the auction. We’ll be doing quilts again this year and Addison (former Creeker extraordinaire) has offered to help out. I am working with her on scheduling time for classes next week. I’ll share more as soon as we confirm with Addison.

7) In case families are asking, the pies Grade 5 sold will be delivered to school on November 8 and will be ready for pick up. I’ll let Ray fill you on the details if you need more info. $4800 worth of pies were sold with a near $2800 profit! The money will be used to fund the end of year overnight trip to the aquarium.

8) Secure vestibule update: Things are beginning to move in terms of the official construction of our vestibule. Here’s the breakdown:
*Exploratory demo work in the vestibule this week (Oct 28-Nov 1).  They’ll be drilling holes in the wall to see what’s in there with the intent to know what they will need to do during construction (is there asbestos?).
*Major demo in the vestibule starting the evening of Nov 7 thru approx Nov 17 – give or take a few days depending on asbestos test results.
*Main entry doors to be closed completely Nov 8 – Nov 15; back doors by the playground will serve as temp main entrance. Yes, the front doors will not be accessible so parents will need to enter and exit through the back door (or exit via Georgia street door, but not enter). The district is hiring someone to sit by the door to let parents in and out to maintain safety.
*The finish work will likely continue for several weeks after the main push but we will be back in operational order by Nov 15.

9) Ofrenda information. Like last year we have an Ofrenda set up in the hallway. Here is the info I sent out recently (hoping you have already seen this): Honoring Loved Ones: As some of you know, I Iived in Mexico for two years prior to moving back to Bend in 2016.  Many of you have heard me gush over my love for Mexico (probably more than once)–I truly love the country, the people, the landscape, the food (oh, the food!), and more than anything the rich culture.  The culture is overflowing with ritual and
meaning, and I loved being a part of it.  I especially loved this time of year in Mexico as they celebrated Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  And one part of the celebration in particular had a deep impact on me–the Ofrenda (oh-friend-ah).  Ofrendas (ofrenda means offering in Spanish), are an essential part of the Day of the Dead celebrations.  While they are also called alters, they are not for worship or religious purposes, but rather a way to honor and keep the memory of loved ones in the present.   Ofrendas are constructed to remember and honor the memory of ancestors and loved ones that have passed.  It is a beautiful ritual, and one that truly honors those that have been a part of our personal history and journey.  Once again this year we will be creating an Amity version of an Ofrenda in the main hallway. One way that you can participate is by bringing in a photograph of someone you’d like to honor; and in keeping this kid friendly this could also be a family pet that is no longer living, too.  The idea is to honor our loved ones who are no longer with us.  Things you can bring to add to the Ofrenda any time in the month of November:
*A photograph of your loved one
*Candles and incense (we won’t light either, they will be symbolic)
*Flowers, usually marigolds, but for our version any flowers will be welcomed
*A trinket that reminds you of your loved one, something that the person you’re honoring enjoyed in life–could something as simple as a food they loved, a golf tee, a deck of cards, or anything that reminds you of the person.

10) I’m leaving around 2:30 today for an admin meeting, and will be leaving at 12:30 on Friday (personal leave).

Upcoming
November 4/5
: Pastini Fundraiser. Families dine at Pastini’s one of these days and we get a percentage of all the money spent.
November 8 (new date): Cafe Amity, Grade 4 hosts
November 11: Veteran’s Day, NO SCHOOL
November 13-15 (new dates): Fall Clothing Exchange
November 14 (new date): Family Bingo Night! 5-6:30pm
November 25-29: Thanksgiving Break
December 7: Staff Holiday Party, Ray has offered to host. Let’s confirm soon!

Here’s to a great week ahead!
Andy

Monday AM Notes, October 21

Good morning!
First, a big thanks to those of you who were able to make it to Harvest Festival and a special thanks for those that were able to help out–your presence and help is greatly appreciated! I hope the rest of your weekend was good!

Conversations this week! Please nudge parents that have yet to sign up, and follow up with parents who do not make it for a convsersatiopn this week, especially parents with whom you really need to meet. If there is anything I can do to support you during Conversations please let me know! There’s a 3 day weekend waiting for you at the end of the week…

A few notes to get you going:
1) Exciting news–we have hired a part time school secretary to support Patti (and you!) in the office. Kelli Esselman is the mom of Lexi in Grade 1 and she has already been volunteering and helping around Amity since day 1–she is truly an incredible addition to our staff! Like Beth did last year, Kelli will be working a flexible schedule from week to week depending on needs in the office. If you have projects or tasks that you would like some help with please work with Patti and Kelli to set it up. If you haven’t met Kelli yet, drop by the office today or tomorrow and say hello.

2) If you have a potentially sick kiddo please send the student to the office to see Patti, Kim, or me. Unless the child clearly needs you to accompany them please send the student with another student or an EA (if you have one). Please do not leave your class unattended to bring a student to the health room–we got you covered here in the office! Thanks!

3) Notes about Community Time. First, thank you for doing all you can to start at 8am. I know this has been difficult and many days key skit members are not here on time; we have to keep pushing parents to get here on time even if it hurts a little–I’ll be sending a note in November newsletter related to this. Regarding CT performances (essentially skits), please be sure to stage your kiddos at the front of the stage so we have the best chance of hearing them speak. I’m currently working on getting some drop down mics donated but in truth we want to work on students projecting their voices. The mics will help with softer speaking students and when we need to use the whole stage for skits, etc.

4) Planning ahead–October 28-31: Please plan to give your students time make masks for Trick or Treating at the Ed Center on Halloween

5) We’ll have a very quick staff meeting Tuesday at 2:45pm. Let’s meet in Fran’s room.

6) I’ll be leaving at 2:45 today to get to an admin meeting.

7) Please sign up for a quick 15 minute SLGG meeting with me–stop and do this now so you don’t forget:

Monday AM Notes, October 14

Good Morning,
I’m hoping you had a fantastic weekend! It’s Harvest Festival week so there will be lots of excitement in the building. Here’s a harvest joke to set the mood: A cyclist who just started a farming business needs to harvest her crops, what does she do? She buys sickles.

A few notes to get you going:
1) Harvest Festival this Saturday. Please attend and help out if you can, and while you’re at it, throw on a costume!

2) EBISS this Wednesday: Our first EBISS (Effective Behavior and Instructional Support Systems) is this week! I have EasyCBM and DIBELS data, please come prepared with data you have collected so we can begin (and in some cases continue) to put support in place for students in need. Schedule (sub will cover your class):
8:30-9:00: Kinder
9:00-9:30: Grade 1
10:00-10:30: Grade 2
10:30-11:00: Grade 3
12:00-12:30: Grade 4
12:30-1:00: Grade 5

3) SIW this week: Originally we were supposed to discuss the Equity and Excellence survey (related to influx of big dollars coming from Student Success Act–$1 Billion coming to schools, $11-13 million coming to BLP), but I have just been notified you are supposed to have the day to prep for Conversations next week, a last minute note from Gary. So, the afternoon is yours!

4) Take care of yourself, Take care of each other, Take care of this place. Please continue to engage your students and make an effort to include this as a part of everyday in your classroom. Thanks!

5) We have 2 COCC students who will be spending time at Amity starting this week to get hours for their undergrad programs–Zoey Canfield and Skyler Larsen. Zoey will be here Tuesdays and Fridays, Skyler on Wednesdays. Zoey is looking for a wide variety of experiences, and Skyler is most interested in working with Stu to get experience with PE. Please welcome them!

6) As you plan your field trips for the rest of Fall and looking towards the Spring, please try not to plan trips on the day you have Art.

7) Earth Quake Drill this Thursday at 10:17am. We are doing this alongside the Great ShakeOut (https://www.shakeout.org) with millions of other people around the US and the globe. Use the language of “DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON” and be sure kids move themselves away from windows if possible. We’ll hold for a moment and then evacuate like a fire drill. Please prep your class.

8) I have an admin meeting today so will be leaving around 3pm.

Upcoming:
*October 16: EBISS
*October 17: Earth Quake Drill, 10:17
*October 19: Harvest Festival, 4-7pm
*October 23-24: Conversations, No school
*October 25: No school and NO WORK!
*November 1: Cafe Amity

Here’s to a great week ahead!
Andy
